GB Pipes is the brand Bulgarian pipe maker George Boyadjiev built from the initials of his own name. The workshop was founded in 2005 and has operated as a one-man business ever since. Boyadjiev is an example of the generation of Eastern European craftsmen who came up through internet forums in the 2000s and worked out their own methods without ever apprenticing under a master.
The Move into Pipemaking
Boyadjiev's move into pipemaking shows that the craft grew not out of any formal training pipeline but out of a curious pipe smoker's own self-taught effort. His earliest work was done with pre-drilled briar sets, which he obtained from American maker Mark Tinsky's business, American Smoking Pipe Co. The first piece to emerge was a plain billiard. That he never received formal training from any professional maker, and instead developed his technique by reading, experimenting, and making his own hand tools, is repeated both in his own account and in independent retailer profiles.
The workshop's equipment limitations have also permanently shaped his method. Rather than following the common sequence of drilling first and shaping afterward, Boyadjiev shapes the bowl first and drills the holes only after. This is the second of the two approaches described in the entry on how a pipe is made, and it is common in freehand designs.
Production and Materials
GB Pipes' output is weighted heavily toward freehand bowls, alongside a smaller share of classic shapes. According to the maker, the briar blocks used are rested for at least three to six months before working. This resting period lets moisture in the block even out and reduces the risk of cracking during shaping. Stems are not bought ready-made; each one is individually cut from ebonite rod, with the tenon made of ebonite or Delrin. Some pieces also use additional materials such as acrylic rod, bamboo shank sections, horn, and silver bands. For the properties of stem materials, see the entry on stem materials.
Annual output, by both the maker's own account and figures given by independent retailers, exceeds two hundred pipes, commissions included. This volume falls far below industrial scale and corresponds to a genuinely one-man workshop.
Grading
The workshop classifies its finished pipes with letters based on appearance. Sandblasted or rustic-surfaced examples are marked R and Rs; smooth pieces that may carry minor surface flaws are marked B; flawless-surfaced examples where the grain matches the shape are marked A; and outstanding pieces distinguished by their material and workmanship are marked AA. The maker states explicitly that this distinction concerns aesthetics only, and that there is no difference in smoking quality between grades.
Boyadjiev also runs a second line under the name NomaD. This line is said to be designed with the on-the-go, out-and-about smoker in mind, distinguished from the main line by its plain shapes and lighter bodies.
