Gezer is the surname shared by three brothers — Şevket, Kudret, and Mesut Gezer — in meerschaum carving. It is not a single registered brand or factory, but describes a family of masters who shared a bench for a time before each went on to produce under his own name. The brothers' work is discussed separately in collector circles; what they share is figural bowls depicting people and animals and dense floral ornamentation.

From a Quarry Village to the Bench

The eldest of the brothers, Şevket Gezer, was born in 1955. According to records, he was born in the village of Kozlubel — formerly Margı — some thirty kilometers from Eskişehir, one of the few settlements in the region where meerschaum is quarried. The same records state that his father both worked at the quarry and carved the stone, meaning the craft entered the family directly through the quarry. Şevket took his place at the bench as an apprentice at fifteen and trained in the workshops of Eskişehir's masters of the day.

Kudret Gezer's introduction to the stone came in 1977, at age twelve. Sources report that he started under his older brother Şevket and was working at his own bench by the early 1980s. Mesut Gezer, the youngest of the brothers, likewise entered the craft at twelve, following his older brothers. Today, all three produce out of Eskişehir.

Partnership and Separation

That the brothers worked together for a time appears in every source; the exact dates of the partnership, however, do not fully agree across records. Retailer biographies say that Kudret and Mesut formed a roughly five-year partnership with their older brother Şevket starting in 1985. That Şevket Gezer has worked alone since 1992 is repeated in multiple sources. The same biographies also note that, besides his brothers, Şevket worked with other well-known masters of the region, such as Salim Şener.

After the separation, the brothers' paths took different shapes. Kudret Gezer is known for the works he signs under his own name, while Mesut Gezer is presented in foreign retailer profiles as the head master of the Servi workshop. Sources diverge, however, on who actually runs this workshop; the information has not been confirmed by an independent record.

Style and Signatures

All three brothers' repertoires include figural carving that turns the entire bowl into a single composition. Şevket is said to be known in particular for floral patterns; Kudret for subjects such as an eagle's talon grasping an egg, a bearded head, and floral-leaf arrangements; and Mesut for portraits and medallion carvings. None of these preferences amounts to a fixed specialty; the same subjects appear across all three men's work.

On signatures, the one clear detail known concerns Mesut Gezer: he is said to have signed his pieces first as "M.GEZER" and, in a later period, simply as "MESUT." How the other two brothers' stamps changed over the years has not been reliably documented.

The brothers' output represents the late-20th-century generation of the Eskişehir meerschaum carving tradition. Because their work rests on narrative figural composition rather than mass-produced molds, it sits close to the artisan pipe conception. The fact that three separate signatures carry the same surname occasionally causes confusion about which brother's hand produced a given piece.
