Giacomo Penzo is an industrial designer and pipe master born in Vicenza, in northeastern Italy. He turned his workshop into a commercial business in 2015, and four years later moved to Ireland to work as a pipe specialist at Peterson. His name is thus tied both to a small-scale Italian workshop and to the manufacturing practice of a well-established factory brand.
The Workshop's Materials and Working Method
Penzo's output is weighted toward classic shapes, a preference he justifies by their functionality and their freedom from the pull of fashion. The rough outline of a classic body is cut on the lathe, the surface is refined on a disc sander, and the stem is hand-cut and worked from rod stock. The sequence changes for the maker's freehand pieces, which lean toward the Danish School: the body is first shaped on the disc so the grain direction is brought out, and drilling and the stem are left until last.
The body's principal material is briar, alongside strawberry tree wood (corbezzolo) and olive wood. Stems use hard rubber (ebonite), cumberland, and methacrylate; spacer rings between shank and stem use boxwood, palm, white walnut, horn, and bamboo. Alongside single commissions, the workshop also takes on cleaning, restoration, and stem replacement work.
The Mark of a Design Education
A product-design education is considered the element that shapes Penzo's view of pipes. In the maker's own description, a pipe is first and foremost a tool that needs to work efficiently; its aesthetics and smoking quality are not considered apart from this functionality. That material choice and production steps are tied to a predetermined set of criteria is likewise a result of the same discipline.
Behind this approach lies an amateur learning period. Penzo's interest in pipes dates to around 2009, his university years; he made his first attempts in the home workshop set up by his father and grandfather. The Vicenza Pipe Club circle, visits to master workshops, and online pipe communities are, according to records, the factors that accelerated his learning process. As repair and commission work grew, the pursuit became a profession, and the business was founded in February 2015.
The Position in Ireland
Having moved to Ireland in 2019, Penzo began working at Peterson under the title of pipe specialist. According to the brand's own promotional materials, his role is to advise on every stage of production, fine-tune equipment, and identify points open to improvement. That the detailed knowledge gained at a handmade bench is carried over to the factory line is considered the distinguishing feature of this position. The maker has continued making his own signed pipes over the same period.
Penzo's situation illustrates a trend seen in the latest generation of handmade Italian pipemaking: makers who grew up at workshop scale carrying their accumulated knowledge into industrial production as well as into their own signed work.
