Gloredo is a China-based handmade briar pipe brand founded by Leslie Ng together with his partners, known for the unusually long shanks it favors. The brand name is formed by combining the English word "glory" with the syllable "-do," which in East Asia carries the meaning of a hall or workshop; the company's Chinese registered name, 榮光堂, matches this reading.
Company Registration and Fate
The brand's corporate entity, Gloredo Co., Limited, was registered as a private company limited by shares in Hong Kong on 5 June 2007; its registration number is 1138511, and the address it reported was in the Wan Chai district. In the same register, the company appears to have been struck off on 28 September 2012. No independent record documenting regular production after this date has been found. The brand's former domain today redirects to a personal site devoted to pipe-smoking culture in China.
A dispute over the brand name is reported in a 2012 editorial note on Pipedia: a shop owner in China is said to have attempted to register the name under his own name in some markets. This information rests on a single source; the claim has not been confirmed by independent records, and the outcome of the attempt could not be traced.
The Long Shank
The brand's defining feature is shank length; the workshop ties this preference to the slender, elongated kiseru pipes of China and Japan. According to Gloredo's own technical rationale, the smoke traveling a longer wooden path before reaching the stem reduces condensation and cools the smoke; this claim is the brand's own explanation and is not supported by an independent measurement. A long shank, on the other hand, makes production harder: the further the drill travels within the block, the greater the chance of hitting a hidden flaw, which can cause a piece to be downgraded or scrapped. How a similar preference is handled by classic brands can be seen in the entry on Dunhill's long-shanked Canadian pipes.
Workshop and Materials
The pipes are hand-shaped. The bowl, mortise, and smoke channel are drilled on an old-style lathe; shaping uses a small band saw, files for different cuts, and sandpaper ranging from 200 to 2000 grit. Cured briar from the Mediterranean is selected for the body, and most of the blocks are plateau. The shape decision is neither left entirely to the direction of the grain pattern nor forced into a ready mold while ignoring the wood's structure.
Stems use German ebonite or acrylic, and the tenon is Delrin; for the differences between these materials, see stem materials. Water buffalo horn, bamboo, silver, gold, jade, and bone, among other natural materials, are used for bands and ornamentation. On pipes stamped with the brand name, the stem carries a hand-inlaid taiji (yin-yang) mosaic motif prepared by combining briar with a second material. Finishing uses both alcohol-based and natural stains, and the surface is polished with carnauba wax.
