Grechukhin is the signature Russian pipe master Vladimir Grechukhin uses on the pipes he produces in Saint Petersburg. The stamp consists of a single letter: a "G" struck onto the body. Spread across nearly half a century of production, this letter has become one of the marks used to trace the tradition of handmade pipes in Russia.

Origin of the Letter

The letter passed from master to apprentice. Grechukhin joined Aleksey Borisovich Fyodorov's workshop as an eighteen-year-old apprentice in the 1970s, and it was his master who gave him the stamp. Fyodorov's own mark was the letter "F"; he is said to have repeated this letter three times on pieces he set apart, and in the last part of his life to have stamped this threefold form on all his work. Grechukhin never multiplied the letter; from his earliest pieces onward, he was content with a single "G." Since the stamp carries no year, model, or series code, dating a pipe by the letter alone is not possible; shape, workmanship, and any secondary stamp are considered together instead. For details of the apprenticeship and the master's career as a pipemaker, see the entry on Vladimir Grechukhin.

Construction Features

The bodies of "G"-stamped pipes are cut from briar. The workmanship detail most often mentioned in sources concerns the stem: the ebonite stem is worked from solid rod, and the tenon fitting into the body is also turned from the same rod rather than a ready-made factory part. The bit section is thin enough to take up little room in the mouth. As a surface finish, plain polish or sandblasting is seen; materials such as horn, boxwood, and black palm are used as thin accent rings between body and stem. Annual production is given in records at around a hundred pipes, a very small figure compared to factory production.

Grade Mark and Anniversary Series

A grade mark is a practice used by many makers: the master sets aside those he likes best among his output and marks them with a symbol added to the stamp. Collector records show that the letter is mentioned not only as a signature but also as such a grade mark: pipes the master considers his most successful by his own standard are set apart under this name. Whether the two uses are formally distinguished from one another is unclear in the records. The practice's clearest form is the anniversary series: on certain birthdays, he stamped a second mark on selected pipes, adding the age he was turning that year next to the letter. Records mention examples stamped G60 and G65; the number of pipes carrying the G65 stamp is said not to exceed seven.

Workshop and Aftermath

Grechukhin's name is also associated, alongside his own signature, with the PS Studio workshop. According to records, at this workshop the design belongs to the master while production belongs to two makers under his supervision; pipes coming out of it are marked not with the "G" stamp but with the workshop's name. Again according to records, the master retired from the bench in 2021; since no new "G"-stamped pipe has been reported after this date, the signature is now found mainly among estate pipes.
