Grunewald Pipes is a small handmade pipe bench American Paul Greenwood founded in Indiana in 2022. Rather than being a continuation of a classic workshop tradition, the brand was born to answer a specific imaginative world: Greenwood noticed at pipe shows that no examples resembled the pipes depicted in The Lord of the Rings, and decided to fill that gap at his own bench. The bench is presented as a father-and-son venture he runs together with his son, Chris.

Founding

By Greenwood's account, he returned to pipes in early 2022 after a long gap, and that same spring attended a pipemaking seminar held as part of the Chicago Pipe Show together with his son. This seminar was the pair's first experience of making a pipe. The brand was founded that same year, and its promotion has run largely through social media accounts. In trade records, the bench appears as a limited liability company at an address in Martinsville, Indiana; whether the workshop actually operates at this address has not been confirmed by independent records.

Series and Style

The brand's starting point is a group called the "Shire Series." These pipes are set apart by pairing a briar bowl with long stems carved from wood; the aim is to visually approach the long-stemmed pipe described in the literary source. Because a wooden stem requires different workmanship from acrylic, both in drilling and in shaping the bit, these pipes are made in limited numbers.

Greenwood has over time also turned to more conventional shapes, making classic models with short acrylic stems. According to brand records, a second series named "Emberling's" was introduced in 2025. The bench's output is thus split between thematic groups and traditional shapes.

Place in the Trade

Paul and Chris Greenwood are reported to be members of the Indiana Pipe Club and to attend pipe shows regularly in neighboring states. In this respect, Grunewald follows the typical path that has fed the American handmade pipe scene since the 2000s: individual benches that start out with seminars given at shows and promote their product through the club and show network. In working with shapes inspired by fantasy literature, it is also mentioned alongside American workshops in the same vein, such as Luna Pipes.

Because of the short time since its founding, the brand has not yet settled into a fixed stamping arrangement or built a wide secondary-market record; much of the available information rests on the founder's own account and observations from the show circuit.
