Gülel is a Turkish pipe brand run by meerschaum carver Medet Kara under his own name. Records place its founding in 2002. Working with block meerschaum, the brand grew out of the Eskişehir carving tradition; it is not a mass-production facility but a signature tied to a single craftsman's bench. The main record that allows the brand to be traced today consists of stamped examples circulating in the overseas estate pipe market.
A Craft Passed Down in the Family
Records give Medet Kara's birth year as 1962; he began working the stone at eleven. Sitting down at the bench at such a young age is not unusual in Eskişehir's mining villages, where the craft is chiefly passed on through master-apprentice relationships within families. In Kara's case, the one who passed it on was his father, Emin Kara, remembered as a master known for figurative carving.
Medet Kara worked together with his brother İmdat Kara for many years. According to records, the two brothers named the brand they founded in 1989 after their father and ran production jointly under the name Emin until 2001. When the partnership split that year, İmdat Kara continued under the old name, while Medet Kara founded his own brand the following year. Such splits are not unexpected in the field of artisan pipe making, where production rests in the hands of individuals: since the brand is often the maker himself, when a partnership dissolves one side usually keeps the old name while the other builds a new one from scratch.
A Bench Close to the Mine
It is stated that the master's acquaintance with meerschaum began in Kozlubel; other records place his bench right next to the mine, in Margı. Margı is referred to in most sources as the old name of Kozlubel; either way, the place in question is one of the quarry villages more than forty kilometers from central Eskişehir.
Setting up a bench close to the mining area is an established habit with a technical rationale. Meerschaum is moist and soft the moment it is extracted from the ground; as it stays in contact with the air it loses moisture and hardens. This is why the window in which carvers find the stone workable for rough shaping is narrow. It is said that Kara has not worked solely for his own brand, but has also taken commissions from some firms in Türkiye and Europe. This is not an unusual arrangement in the meerschaum field; pipes coming from the same hand may circulate under different names. The master also produces work under the signature "Medet," so the name Gülel covers not the whole of his output but a portion of it.
Stamp and Style
In the secondhand market, the brand is identified by the "GULEL" stamp struck on the shank; examples bearing letter abbreviations alongside the stamp are also recorded. The master's early work is described as pipes with simple, restrained classic lines in which ornamentation is not prominent; established shapes of the billiard type are among the known examples from this period. In later years the style is said to have shifted toward denser detail, with figurative carving becoming more pronounced. This shift in direction is consistent with the general tendency of the Eskişehir school: high-relief and figurative work has long been considered the region's chief distinguishing feature in its output aimed at outside markets.
