Hedegaard (Peter Hedegaard)
The brand under which Danish master Peter Hedegaard (1951-2007) produced pipes under his own name. Trained at the W. Ø. Larsen workshop, he was known for low, voluminous freehand shapes that visually set the bowl apart from the shank.

Hedegaard is the brand under which Danish pipe maker Peter Hedegaard (1951-2007) signed his pipes with his own name. Production remained limited to a small bench where the master worked alone, yet his pipes reached many countries around the world. The brand is today counted among the generation of the Danish School that came of age in the 1970s.
Formal Language
Most of Hedegaard's work consists of freehand pieces that fall outside classic molds. The way the relationship between bowl and shank is built is distinctive: bowls recalling a sphere, a cone, or a bulldog body connect to the shank with a fluid transition, while the bowl continues to stand as a separate mass. The resulting silhouette is often low and voluminous. Even in pieces where the master approaches classic families, the interpretation remains free; collector listings record examples combining the Rhodesian line with elements drawn from horn and Belge shapes. This personal idiom is understood to have settled early in his career.
Workshop Years
Hedegaard's name appears as an apprentice at the W. Ø. Larsen workshop in Copenhagen in 1976; at the time, the bulk of his work consisted of repairs, the usual task assigned to apprentices. The workshop's staff in the same period gathered together names that would later define Danish pipe making: management was in the hands of Hans "Former" Nielsen, and Teddy Knudsen, Tonni Nielsen, and Poul Ilsted had also passed through the same benches.
After leaving Larsen, he set up his first own workshop, again in Copenhagen. Some time later he moved his bench to Helsingør, a port town at the northern tip of Zealand. His return to Jutland, where he was born and spent his childhood, came only in the last stretch of his life; he made his final pipes in Frederikshavn. Records indicate he died on April 8, 2007, following an illness that lasted several months.
Stamp and Quality Grades
The pipes carry a stamp arranging "PETER" and "HEDEGAARD" in a curved line, along with the phrase "HAND MADE IN DENMARK"; the quality mark is generally struck above this stamp. The grades, ranked from lowest to highest, run: sandblasted, FP1, FP2, FP3, OP1, OP2, OP3, B, and A. Above these are AA-stamped pipes, though very few exist. One important detail is that grading was applied only to pipes destined for export; pieces going to the Scandinavian market were mostly left unstamped. For this reason, a Hedegaard pipe bearing no grade mark should not on its own be considered lower quality.
