Heiner Nonnenbroich is a pipemaker running a small-scale workshop in Germany's Lower Rhine region. Born in 1953, Nonnenbroich's actual profession was piano teaching; he pursued pipemaking as a second occupation while teaching at a music school. By his own account he began treating the work seriously and moved to regular production from 2002 onward; records indicate the workshop closed around 2016, though this date has not been confirmed by an independent record. In the roughly fifteen years that passed, the pipes that emerged, though few in number, became a signature recognized in German collecting circles. The workshop's address is given in sources sometimes as Krefeld, sometimes as Kerken; the year of the move between the two locations is unclear.
Workshop and Method
Every piece Nonnenbroich produced was hand-shaped, that is, of freehand character, designed without adherence to a ready mold. The briar he used, by his own account, was sourced as plateaux-cut blocks from the Mediterranean basin; this preference is explained by the ability to see the grain pattern in its entirety. It must also be added that sources do not agree on exactly where the briar came from: the description on his site cites Italy and Spain, while José Manuel Lopes's compilation adds Algeria and Corsica alongside Italy. After shaping and staining, the stummel was oiled, left to dry for several days, then polished and finished with carnauba wax. This sequence of steps also explains the workshop's limited production speed; annual output is reported not to exceed a few dozen.
He cut his mouthpieces himself, from German-made vulcanite rod; his turn toward vulcanite is counted among the workshop's distinguishing habits among mouthpiece materials. On the matter of filters, sources plainly conflict: according to the explanation on the maker's own site, most of the pipes were filter-less, with a 9 mm filter chamber opened only on order; Lopes's compilation, by contrast, reports that the bulk of production was 9 mm filtered and that acrylic mouthpieces were used as well. These two records have not been reconciled to this day.
Stamp and Grading
Nonnenbroich classified his output using a letter-based grading system. For smooth-surfaced pipes the scale ran from E up through D, C, B, and A, rising to AA; for sandblasted pieces a separate series was used — ED, EC, EB, and EA. The form of the stamp also changed over time: records indicate that until May 2007 the stummel carried the abbreviation "HN" and the inscription "Handmade," after which the maker's full name began to be engraved. The grade letter was added next to the stamp; so a pipe bearing "HN Handmade" points to an earlier-period piece.
Visibility
The workshop presented its products both through German pipe shops and, from the early 2010s onward, directly through its own website. Nonnenbroich was also among the participants of the German pipemakers' gathering held in Rheinbach, and was noted as one of the figures sharing workshop knowledge with those new to pipemaking. Since production stopped, his name has lived on mostly in secondary-market collector circulation.
