Henrik Kroll is a contemporary pipemaker working alone in northern Germany. His workshop has neither journeyman nor assistant; every stage of a pipe, from block selection to final polish, passes through the same hand. The detail that sets the maker apart among German workshops is that he produces his mouthpieces not from ready-made molds but from solid rod.
Workshop and Craftsmanship
Stummels are cut from plateau briar blocks; bore axes are opened to the maker's own measurements. Mouthpieces, meanwhile, are cut from solid rod, milled, and then hand-finished. By Kroll's own statement, this holds for the whole of his production, from the lowest grade to the highest: pipes are graded between C* and PK, and in all of them the mouthpiece is handwork.
This choice sits at the very center of a long-running definitional debate in Germany. How the mouthpiece is made is considered one of the most concrete indicators of whether a workshop truly works by hand or is assembling ready-made parts; this is why Kroll insistently emphasizes the point in his promotional texts.
Learning the Craft
Kroll was born in 1990 in Lüneburg. His familiarity with pipes comes from home; his father is both a smoker and a collector. Though he bought his first pipe at eighteen, his interest only became lasting at twenty. This second beginning, and his subsequent turn toward collecting handmade pipes, was the step that truly carried his interest from user to maker.
There was no apprenticeship; he acquired the craft by reading and experimenting. A buffing machine he bought in spring 2013 to shape pre-drilled hobby blocks was the first step. In the summer of the same year he acquired two lathes at once: a large machine allowing him to drill and shape plateau blocks himself, and a small bench lathe devoted to mouthpiece work. This equipment turned his hobby experiments into a genuine production setup. 2014 is remembered as the year the workshop turned to handmade pipes exclusively.
Danish Ties
In 2018 he met two Danish masters: one referred to in sources as Holmer Knudsen, and Hans "Former" Nielsen. Both both guided him and allowed him to tour their workshops. His 2019 visit to Former in Denmark is counted, in the maker's own account, among the turning points of his career. The Danish school traces read in his work are also largely explained by this contact.
Recognition and Production
His name began to be heard in German pipe circles in the late 2010s; he took part in the Intertabac fair held in Dortmund in 2018 and 2019. According to the account given, he left his salaried job during this period to move into full-time pipemaking; sources do not give the exact year of the transition. His shape repertoire shows both classic molds and freely shaped (freehand) work; this is not the workshop's official classification but a general observation drawn from pipes in circulation. Annual output, staying within the natural limits of a one-man workshop, is low, and this places Kroll among contemporary European workshop masters rather than mass-production brands.
