Henry Leonard & Thomas Inc., known as HLT, is one of the most defining companies of mid-twentieth-century American series-production pipemaking. It was founded on May 31, 1938, in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, New York, by Henry J. Lavietes and two partners. Within fifteen years of its founding, the company had grown large enough to purchase a brand both older and far more famous than itself, Dr. Grabow.

The New York Years and Royalton

In its early years, the company's mainstay was patented small mechanisms. Records indicate that a mouthpiece (stem) arrangement developed by Henry Lavietes, used in both pipes and cigarette holders, was patent-protected on March 9, 1943. The innovation that truly made the brand's name, however, was the Royalton filter chamber; its patent is said to have been obtained in 1944. This cavity opened into the shank was meant to trap condensing moisture and tar before it reached the mouth, and was a typical example of the filter and moisture-trapping systems rapidly multiplying in the American market of the era. Although HLT's catalogue contained many other lines, the name that has lasted has been Royalton.

The Move to Sparta

The step that changed the company's geography came from within the family. Henry Lavietes's father, David Lavietes, went to the town of Sparta, North Carolina, in the early 1940s. Since wartime had disrupted the supply of Mediterranean-sourced briar, the aim was to gather laurel and mountain-laurel root from the region and ship it to production in New York. David Lavietes eventually chose to stay in the town; together with his son Paul he founded a fifteen-person workshop called D&P Pipe Works. The idea behind the Ajustomatic mechanism still found in Dr. Grabow pipes today is, records indicate, attributed to him.

Shortly after 1944, Henry Lavietes made a sudden decision to close the New York operation and move all production to Sparta. This small town in Alleghany County remained one of the centers of American pipe manufacturing for generations to come.

Growth, Acquisitions, and What Followed

In 1953, HLT purchased all the assets and machinery of the Chicago-based Dr. Grabow company; according to secondary sources, the deal also covered production within M. Linkman & Co. After the machinery was moved from Chicago, manufacture of the Grabow and Hollycourt lines continued in Sparta. In the same years, the Continental Briar Company, which held the Royal Duke, Duke of Dundee, and Honeydew brands, was also acquired. The word "Duke" still appearing in Grabow model names today is regarded as a holdover from this acquisition.

On October 21, 1969, United States Tobacco announced it had acquired HLT, which also owned the Mastercraft brand. The company was run for a time as a separate legal entity; in 1985, Sparta Pipes, Mastercraft, and HLT were merged under the name Sparta Industries, Inc. The HLT name passed in subsequent years first to Lane, then in 2006 to its current owner, International Pipes & Accessories. Royalton continues to be produced as part of the Dr. Grabow line, under the original HLT stamp.
