Directory of Dutch Pipe Brands brings together, in alphabetical order, pipe names founded in the Netherlands, run by Dutch makers, or whose production is based in that country. The names on this list come from two separate strands: the Gouda clay pipe tradition carried on across generations, and factory-scale briar production run along the Roermond–Herten line in the south of the country. The entries summarize only what has been documented; undocumented points are stated explicitly.
Brands
-
Amphora — A pipe name produced within Gubbels. Because production was kept limited, pipes bearing this stamp are rarely encountered on the market; the name's main function has been to accompany the promotional and award campaigns of the tobacco carrying the same name. Records list it as one of the firm's four brands, alongside Big Ben, Hilson, and Royal Dutch.
-
Big Ben — Today the best-known name under the Gubbels umbrella. The name's original owner was a small, Amsterdam-based trading firm that sold various goods, pipes among them, to many countries. When Elbert Gubbels & Zonen B.V., looking for a ready-made brand it could use abroad, bought that firm, the name changed hands and became the company's flagship brand.
-
Copenhagen Style — Despite its Danish-sounding name, it is Dutch in origin: Gubbels gathered pipes that failed to clear its top quality tier under this name. No further detail about the line has been documented; its history can be traced within that of the firm it belongs to.
-
Croydon — A pipe name mentioned in records alongside the Almelo address and Don Bernard Pipes. There is no documented information on its founding date, production scale, or the nature of the link between the two names.
-
Don Bernard Pipes — A pipe brand registered in Amsterdam under the name Bernard Myburgh. The only concrete information available is the maker's name and the workshop's city; production method, scale, and brand history are undocumented.
-
GtP — An abbreviation of Gouda Tobacco Pipes; it covers the clay pipes made in Gouda by Adriaan van der Want. Van der Want is considered the last link in the city's line of clay pipe makers. The pipes are produced in various sizes, shapes, and colors; the double-walled construction of the bowl is the main technical feature distinguishing these products from traditional long Gouda clay pipes. Another primary name under the same workshop is Zenith.
-
Royal Dutch — Takes its name from the royal warrant Queen Juliana granted to the Gubbels factory; the line was introduced in 1972 following that warrant. After a period out of production, it returned to the market. Current production is said to use briar rested for forty years; mouthpieces are vulcanite, and the finish is a light walnut tone.
