Ib Olsen

A Danish pipe maker trained at the S. Bang bench whose work was stamped under his own name because it was considered too free-form, and of which very few examples remain today.

Ib Olsen is a Danish pipe maker who worked at the S. Bang workshop during the period Svend Bang ran it. The most visible proof of his craftsmanship is that the pipes to come from his hand were stamped not with the workshop's brand but with his own name. His name appears rarely in the literature of the Danish school; most of what is known about him has likewise been passed down through the makers who shared the same bench. Because some records do not agree with one another, caution is needed on the details.

At the S. Bang Bench

Since the Copenhagen workshop's founder was not himself a carver, it ran from the start on makers brought in from outside. Records show that Olsen was on this roster in the same years as Per Hansen, Ulf Noltensmeier, and Ph. Vigen, who would later be known under his own signature. The workshop's working order was based on each maker carrying a pipe through alone from the first cut to the final polish. This order made it possible to distinguish makers' hands from one another even under a single brand stamp; Olsen's case can be counted as the most extreme example of that distinction. The workshop's preference for turning out only a small number of pipes a year also left each maker time to develop his own line; that a maker's hand rather than his name comes to the fore in the Danish school's high-grade thinking is a result of this way of working.

Pipes Stamped Under His Own Name

As the story goes, the shapes Olsen carved from briar were less traditional and more free-form than the S. Bang repertoire of the time. The brand's owner was reluctant to put these pieces into circulation under his own stamp; the solution found was to sign the pipes with the maker's name. This distinction did not amount to a quality tier. Records show that Ib Olsen pipes also used the same Cumberland mouthpiece material and silver ferrules the workshop used in those years; the grading order stayed the same too, with tiers marked I through V in Roman numerals. In short, the name differed, not the standard. This solution is not unusual for Danish workshops of the period: work that did not fit a brand's identity was often gathered into a separate line under the maker's own signature.

Afterward

When Svend Bang retired in 1984, he handed the workshop over to Hansen and Noltensmeier; Vigen also turned to his own signature around that time. Olsen, it is said, left the bench and withdrew into a life out of the public eye. Pipes bearing his own name are rarely seen today and are known mostly within collector circles. Sources do not fully agree on his standing within the S. Bang roster, on his output, or on his influence; while some accounts describe him as a prolific and innovative maker, the scarcity of surviving examples makes that picture hard to confirm.
