Il Ceppo is a small-scale handmade pipe workshop that has operated since the late 1970s in the Adriatic coastal city of Pesaro, Italy. The name means "the stump" or "the block" in Italian, referring to the raw material at the brand's starting point, the briar block. The workshop is counted, alongside Mastro de Paja and Ser Jacopo, within the Pesaro circle, one of the two major centers of Italian pipe making.

Founding and Early Years

The brand was founded by Giorgio Imperatori, an architect with a passion for pipes. Sources do not agree on the founding year: some records give 1977, others 1978; some texts profiling the brand push the workshop's core back as far as the early 1970s. What is agreed on is that the first pipes reached the market in the late 1970s.

Collectors examine Il Ceppo by dividing it into two periods. On pipes from the first period, which ran until roughly 1996, the "Il Ceppo" stamp is struck on the shank in a slightly arched form. Alongside the stamp sit a letter between A and H, a four- or five-digit number, and a group number enclosed in a triangle.

The Rossi Siblings Period

Franco Rossi joined the business in the mid-1990s; after Imperatori left pipe making, he took over the brand, according to records, around 1996. That same date is also counted as the start of what collectors call the second period. Production concentrated after this date in the hands of Franco and his sister Nadia. The workshop's annual output has been reported at around fifteen hundred pipes; a significant portion of this goes abroad, chiefly to the United States.

Il Ceppo has continued to work at workshop scale: by its own account, blocks are seasoned for at least two years before shaping begins, the bulk of the shaping rests on handwork, and the lathe is brought in only at certain stages. In the second period, multi-faceted, panel-carved bowls became one of the brand's recognized lines.

Another maker whose name comes up in the workshop's history is Massimo Palazzi. Palazzi worked alongside Il Ceppo for a time before leaving in 1998 to found his own brand, L'Anatra.

Stamps and Grades

On second-period pipes, the "Il Ceppo" lettering is struck in a straight line; the quality information is given by a single numeral. This numeral indicates, first, the surface treatment, and second, the grain quality.

3

In terms of scale and way of working, Il Ceppo sits closer to the artisan pipe tradition than to the large Italian firms that produce in series.
