Il Ciocco is a one-man Italian pipe workshop that has been producing since 2011 in the city of Pescara, in the Abruzzo region. The workshop's owner is Antimo Parolise, born in 1963 and known in the community as "Mimmo." The brand name means a log or block of wood in Italian, pointing to a way of working centered on the raw material.

Materials

The main material for the bodies is Italian briar plateau. Alongside it, strawberry tree (corbezzolo), olive wood, and morta are used; Parolise is also open to trying other wood species. Mouthpieces are made from methacrylate or vulcanite, depending on what the piece calls for. The properties of these two materials are compared in the mouthpiece materials entry.

Shape and Finishing

The area the workshop emphasizes is freehand work. According to Parolise, briar's grain pattern already suggests a direction; the maker's job is simply to read that direction. Classic molds are not left out of production either, but they are most often taken up in reinterpreted form.

The finishing method that stands out is contrast staining: bringing dark and light tones together to make the flame grain more distinct. This approach, which emphasizes grain quality, goes hand in hand with carrying every stage, from selecting the body to polishing, through a single pair of hands.

Star Grading

Il Ciocco pipes are classified according to grain quality in a five-tier star system:

Stars

Meaning

★

No flame grain or bird's-eye

★★

Limited pattern

★★★

Ordinary density of pattern

★★★★

Dense flame grain or pronounced bird's-eye

★★★★★

Exceptional-quality body

This scale is the maker's own definition; it has no shared equivalent across the industry. Similar star or letter systems are valid within many workshops individually and are not suited to direct comparison between brands.

The Workshop's Background

Parolise's first encounter with the pipe was as a smoker; he moved into making later. His woodworking goes back further: he worked on repairing antique furniture dating to the late nineteenth century, and it was there that he gained his manual skill. He learned pipe making not at a master's bench but from books and online sources, working out the stages of drilling, sanding, coloring, and polishing through his own trial and error. Records show his first pipe was completed on 6 January 2011.

One habit of the workshop is not to discard bodies that come out flawed; these pieces are kept and turned into small objects such as pipe stands or mallets. This measured use of raw material places Il Ciocco among the small Italian workshops defined not by production volume but by the labor spent per piece.
