IMP is a brand name for hand-carved pipes made from block meerschaum, with products distributed mainly through the United States. Rather than a single maker's bench, it is best understood as a brand umbrella under which pipes carved in Türkiye are gathered for the export market. When the brand was founded and who founded it do not appear in public sources; what can be verified about IMP is largely limited to the makeup of the product itself and to the brand name's registration records.
Brand and Ownership
The name "IMP" is registered under international class 34, covering tobacco and tobacco accessories. A record entering the archive in 2020 lists the registration's owner as a company incorporated in the United States and states that distribution runs through that company. The brand's own domain today redirects to a sales site called MeerschaumMarket, where IMP is presented, in the same class, as MeerschaumMarket's registered brand. The American trademark registry also contains an "IMP" application filed on 1 April 2013 for meerschaum pipes, listing as owner the same name that also owns the Servi brand. Since the sources do not connect these records to one another, no single chain of ownership is established here; the account is limited to noting that the name has changed hands at least twice.
Workshop and Construction
Carving is carried out in a small workshop in Türkiye; records place the workshop in Eskişehir, considered the center of this craft for its quarries and its centuries-old carving tradition. The material worked is not pressed stone made by compacting stone dust but single-block meerschaum, cut to pipe-sized pieces after being taken from the quarry.
The division of labor at the workshop follows the arrangement established in traditional meerschaum production: rough shaping is taken on by an apprentice, while fine carving and detail are left to the master; figural work is entirely in the master's hands. The finished bowl is kiln-dried to release the moisture inside it, then smoothed with sandpaper and passed through a bath of melted natural beeswax. According to the manufacturer's own account, the final step is polishing the surface with bone ash.
Mouthpiece and Fittings
Meerschaum's softness creates a wear problem at the point where the mouthpiece is repeatedly inserted and removed, namely the shank opening. IMP addresses this by fitting a bushing into the shank hole: the mouthpiece seats into the bushing on a delrin (acetal resin) tenon and is pulled off and refitted the way it usually is on briar pipes. The mouthpieces are made of acrylic; acrylic is a common choice for meerschaum pipes because it needs less upkeep than the hard rubber that oxidizes and dulls over time. Every pipe comes with a hand-carved, velvet-lined, leather-covered wooden case.
Shapes and Coloring
The catalog includes established shapes such as the billiard, poker, rhodesian, zulu, horn, Oom Paul, and bent dublin, along with inverted-calabash-style examples and named models; figural carvings are also part of the range. Because every bowl is hand-carved, no two examples of the same shape will match exactly in weight and wall thickness. Owing to its porous structure, meerschaum is considered not to need a separate break-in period. The bowl generally darkens from the bottom up as it absorbs tar with use and under the effect of the surface wax, and each pipe settles into a tone of its own. For smokers who would rather not wait for this change, the brand is known to apply color to some bowls.
