Irmismarbel Meerschaum is a brand name once used in overseas sales channels for the work of Eskişehir meerschaum master Ahmet Gövem. It appears in the records not as a corporate company title but as a single bench's face turned toward the outside world; over the years the output of the same workshop has been marketed under the headings "Irmismarbel," "Meerschaum Pipe Master," and, more recently, "AGovem," derived from the master's own name. This multiplicity of names is a natural consequence of the fact that production in Eskişehir rests largely on small, non-corporate benches.

The Master's Lineage

According to the Eskişehir Municipality's Historical Label record, which compiles the city's long-established tradespeople, Ahmet Gövem represents a mastery of meerschaum carving spanning four generations. Born in Odunpazarı, he entered the craft in his youth as an apprentice to his father Sümer Gövem, and in time set up his own bench. The same record gives the workshop's founding year as 1990, states that the business has been active ever since, and notes that the master has attended international fairs to further his craft. Since other founding years also appear in commercial promotional texts, this date is presented here as sourced from the municipal record.

The Bench at Atlıhan

In the records where the Irmismarbel name appears, the workshop's location is given as Atlıhan in Odunpazarı. Built in the 1850s as a caravanserai, this structure was rebuilt by the municipality in 2006 with attention to its original architecture and converted into a crafts bazaar housing some twenty-five artisan shops. The bazaar today is the most visible showcase of Eskişehir meerschaum carving, and the brand is remembered as one of the benches working side by side there. More recent business records tied to the master also show other addresses in the city, so the workshop's location may have changed over time.

Production and Product Range

The workshop states that it uses solid block meerschaum, not the pressed material made from meerschaum chips. Block stone is regarded in the craft as the mark of quality, and because each piece is carved by hand, no two pipes off the same bench are ever exactly alike. Output runs along two lines. On one side are pieces whose bowls are carved as figures: sales and auction listings mention sculptural subjects such as dragons, human portraits, human figures, and Masonic emblems. On the other side are classic pipe shapes and cigarette holders, most often mentioned together with their own cases. This dual orientation is common in Eskişehir: the figural pieces continue the region's sculptural carving tradition dating back to the 19th century, while the classic shapes meet the expectations of the export market.

The Name Today

The Irmismarbel name appears predominantly in export channels of the 2000s and 2010s; the old website tied to this name is no longer accessible today. In recent years the same bench has been marketed directly under the master's own name, and the overlapping contact information in the listings confirms that both names belong to the same workshop. Production run by a single master like this sits closer to artisan pipe-making than to series manufacture, which is why the brand's continuity is considered tied to the master's presence at the bench.
