J. Alan Pipes is the brand under which American master Jeffrey A. Burt-Gracik (known as Jeff Gracik) makes handmade briar pipes single-handedly in his workshop in San Diego, California. The brand is counted among the generation of contemporary American artisan pipe making that rose to prominence in the 2000s; it draws its shape sense largely from the Danish tradition and is known for a production in which every piece is individually numbered and bears a year stamp.
From Theology to the Bench
Gracik was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His first engagement with the craft, according to records, coincides with the years he spent earning a graduate degree in theology at Princeton: experiments with hobby-grade briar blocks, ready-made mouthpieces, and a few hand tools. His plan at the time was to stay in academia. He is said to have shaped his first briar pipes in the early 2000s, acquired his first lathe soon after, and made his first sale in the mid-2000s. Within a few years the experiments turned into a full-time occupation, and the academic path was set aside. Gracik settled in San Diego with his wife and set up there the one-person workshop the brand is still tied to today.
Masters and Influences
Gracik's education proceeded less through a formal apprenticeship than through visiting masters one by one. In his early years he drew on a widely used pipe-making guide aimed at amateurs and on the contact he established with pipe master Tim West. The decisive stop was the workshop of Todd Johnson, then working under the name STOA Briars: there he learned the fluid shape sense of the Danish school and the Danish-style drilling method, which aims to make the most of the grain in the block. By Gracik's own account, he overhauled both his bench and the materials he used after this visit. In later years he counts Danish maker Tonni Nielsen and Jody Davis, owner of the J. Davis Pipes workshop, among the masters he has watched, and states that he keeps his designs open to the criticism of collectors and colleagues.
Stamp System and Workmanship
The brand's grading departs from common workshop practice. The only tier name used is Wave, made rarely and referring to the master's passion for surfing; the rest of the pipes are given no tier at all. Instead, each piece is stamped with its production sequence number and the year it was made, so a given J. Alan pipe's place in the workshop's history can be read directly from the stamp.
Only dried and aged top-grade briar is used in production. Gracik says he does not impose a predetermined mold on the block, and that the shape emerges according to the direction of the grain; for this reason the workshop's output does not map neatly onto classic shape names. Mouthpieces are hand-cut from ebonite, cumberland, or old-stock Bakelite, and the bit opening is also worked by hand. Ornamentation is kept minimal; some pipes feature bamboo, boxwood, and silver bands the master makes himself. Surface finish is limited to two options, smooth and sandblasted.
Alan Brothers
When the one-person workshop's output could no longer meet demand, Gracik set up a second line called Alan Brothers with his brother Jeremy Gracik. Sources give two different years, 2013 and 2015, for the line's start; the discrepancy has not been resolved. Alan Brothers pipes are made from a limited number of shapes drawn by Jeff: rough shaping is done by machine, while assembly and finishing are completed by hand. According to records, rough shaping takes place in Italy, with final finishing carried out in the United States.
