J.L. Thompson is a one-man pipe workshop operating in the town of Parkville, Maryland, in a suburb just north of Baltimore, in the United States. The name behind the brand is Jason Thompson; he makes his pipes at a small bench set up in his home's basement, and earns his living not from pipe making but from a landscape architecture job at a firm in the area.

Founding the Bench

The workshop was not originally set up for pipes. When Thompson got a small lathe for his bench, his intention was to make wooden ornaments and similar gift items; the pipe is a change of direction that emerged from within that lathe pursuit. His first attempt is dated 2013, carved not from briar but from a piece of osage orange he had on hand. This was followed by a self-taught period spanning years and many pipes; the technical knowledge circulating in the online forums where makers gather, along with critiques of his early work, were the defining factors of this period. For the basic steps of the craft, see the pipe making entry.

The BriarLab Years and Recognition

From 2015 to early 2017, Thompson was a member of the BriarLab team run by Nate King. This connection is considered the brand's turning point both for settling his technique and for introducing the small-scale production he ran alone to the pipe community; the name "J.L. Thompson" becoming a signature also dates to these years. Records indicate that in 2016 one of the maker's pipes was among the winners of the carving competition held at the Kansas City pipe show; sources disagree on whether this placement was one of seven individual winners or part of a joint team of seven pipes. His work also became visible in the estate market during the same period. In estate records the pipes are identified by stamps reading "JL Thompson" and the abbreviation "JLT."

Style and Production

Since it runs alongside a full-time job and a household with three children, production is deliberately kept narrow: roughly twenty to thirty pipes a year. For this reason he rarely takes orders. This scale places the brand within the American workshop tradition that treats every piece individually rather than in series production; the general framework of this tradition is discussed in the American handmade pipe scene entry. The main material is briar, and the weight of the work goes toward bringing out the wood's own texture: making the grain pattern visible is, in the maker's own description, among the top standards. Both smooth-polished and sandblasted surfaces are used; the shapes are trim, restrained interpretations drawing on the classic English-American repertoire.

Thompson is also recorded to have appeared as a guest on the radio program hosted by Brian Levine, where he spoke about his workshop; which episode the interview aired in has not been independently confirmed.
