JanPipes is the stamp Czech pipe maker Jan Klouček has applied to his pipes since 1999. The workshop operates in Kostelec nad Černými lesy, a small town near Prague. What sets Klouček apart among Central Europe's contemporary workshops is that he runs a standard line of recurring classic shapes alongside a small number of individually designed pieces, all from the same bench.
Training and the Workshop's Founding
Klouček learned the craft in France, around Saint-Claude, considered the cradle of the pipe industry. As he transitioned into his own production, his most concrete support came from the established French manufacturer Chacom; the firm's owner, Yves Grenard, was his chief technical advisor in the workshop's early years. This is why JanPipes' approach to craftsmanship sits closer to French bench tradition than to the Danish school. As the story goes, the maker's first encounter with pipes began in a Prague pipe and tobacco shop; this detail has not been confirmed in independent sources.
The town where the workshop was founded has its own craft history: records indicate that in the nineteenth century, small workshops producing ceramic pipe bowls operated in Kostelec nad Černými lesy. Klouček's work is regarded as a contemporary continuation of this local tradition.
Production Program
Production splits into two branches. The standard line consists of a small number of classic, conservative shapes; the same bowls are repeated with varying surface finishes and color schemes. Aimed mainly at the Czech market, this line is considered the technical foundation that keeps the maker's hand in practice; the repeated production of classic shapes in high numbers over the years has built up the base the workshop draws on when moving into free design.
The second branch consists of custom designs made in limited numbers. These pieces are finished entirely by hand from start to finish; the shape idea comes from architecture, technical objects, and nature. The most-cited example of architectural inspiration is the "Gaudí Dreams" series, which emerged after a 2006 trip to Barcelona and references the buildings of Antoni Gaudí. In these works, the grain of the briar block is the determining factor in the design; the pieces are often finished with silver rings and fittings, and sometimes with exotic wood inlays. Since the shape emerges from the material rather than a mold, this approach is regarded as close to the freehand ethos.
Courses and Club Work
Another well-known side of the workshop is the amateur pipe-making courses it has run since 2006. Initially open to the Czech pipe community around Dýmka.net, these sessions have over time reached an international group of participants. Each participant gets to see every stage of production firsthand and finish a pipe of their own design; more than fifty sessions are reported to have been held over the years. Klouček has also prepared special pipes for clubs and events; club pipes made for the Barcelona Pipa Club and Dýmka.net, and the competition pipes for the 2006 world slow-smoking championship held in Mariánské Lázně, are among those cited.
