Jason Patrick is a contemporary pipe maker working in Elgin, a Chicago suburb in the U.S. state of Illinois. Though he came to the craft relatively late, he became a recognized name in short order, counted among the new generation of American makers who emerged toward the late 2010s.

The Road to the Bench

By his own account, Patrick's introduction to pipes goes back to his childhood and a grandfather who smoked one; his path from smoker to maker, however, took years to unfold. It is known that he finished his first pipe in 2019 — a date the maker's own materials also give as the craft's beginning.

Being a professional photographer gave him a ready-made toolkit on the design side. Years of habit around framing, proportion, and surface light proved directly useful in reading the grain of a briar block. By his own account he also worked for many years as a pastor, leaving that role in 2024 to devote his time to the bench.

Style and Making

English classics dominate his early work; by studying canonical shapes such as the billiard and dublin, he built his foundational grasp of proportion. In later years the weight shifted toward the Danish school. In the freehand approach that is this tradition's defining method, the maker follows not a fixed list of measurements but the block's own grain direction; the shape emerges from whatever the wood offers. In Patrick's more recent work, this free line is what stands out. Two traditions sit side by side at his bench: predetermined classic shapes, and pieces left to follow the block's own orientation, are both part of the same production flow.

He mostly uses ebonite for stems, with colored options also offered. He is known to work with unusual materials such as mammoth ivory, whale bone, and fordite for bands and ornamentation. His production scale is small: reported figures put it at roughly ten pipes a month. At a one-person bench, this pace amounts to only about a hundred pieces a year; the number of pipes he has finished since first going full-time is said to run to a few hundred. Since there is no independent production record, these figures are approximate.

Stamp and Series

Patrick presents his work in several tiers. Above the base and classic lines sits a later-added upper series, set apart by the word "Voyager" placed next to the maker's stamp and individually numbered. He also produces one-off pieces on commission. As is common at one-person workshops, the stamp is simple; beyond marking the brand and series, no elaborate coding system is used.

He is counted among the makers within the American handmade pipe scene, which gained strength from the 2000s on, who deliberately keep their workshop scale small.
