Jeremiah Sandahl is a handmade pipe maker working in the U.S. state of Minnesota. His workshop does not do batch production; every pipe is shaped individually. The main reason Sandahl is discussed in the community is that he entered the craft not with a ready-made kit but with a bare block of briar. Records do not give the exact year the workshop was founded; the earliest known traces reach back to the mid-2010s.

Product Profile

Pipes seen in trade records are marked on the shank face with "JEREMIAH" and "SANDAHL" arranged in an arc; in the middle sits a "USA" stamp along with the last two digits of the production year, accompanied by a small animal figure. Surface treatment includes both plain polish and sandblasting, and on some examples the shank band is decorated with silverwork. The maker is known to have a quality-grading system based on his own criteria; there is no accessible record of the tiers and criteria of this system.

A Self-Taught Craft

By Sandahl's own account, his starting point was thrift: around the time he took up pipe smoking, he tried making a pipe himself that would be higher quality than a factory piece and yet cost less. He acquired a block of briar and a stem rod and opened the chamber and smoke channel with whatever ordinary tools were on hand. The satisfaction he got from the work brought a second and third block, after which he began collecting tools used specifically for pipe making. He states that he never used a pre-drilled kit at any stage.

The pursuit turned into a saleable business within a few months. When a local tobacconist, in conversation, learned that he made pipes, he made an offer on the pipe Sandahl had on him at the time — an offer that showed him what he produced could find buyers.

The Chicago Test and Cannoy's Guidance

The real turning point was the Chicago pipe gathering, where makers come together. Going to seek feedback, he came away from the gathering having found himself less accomplished than he had thought. Afterward he spent months focused on basic shapes, especially the billiard family; during the same period he closely followed the Pipe Makers Forum, the online discussion space for pipe makers.

Chief among those from whom he sought regular feedback in this period was Walt Cannoy. The reviews built around the billiard assignments Cannoy set are considered decisive in settling his aesthetic criteria for shaping and finishing, as well as practical knowledge of tool use. He is said to have received a positive response from both collectors and colleagues at the next Chicago gathering.

It is said within the community that the workshop has over time become a family affair, with his family joining in on stages such as sanding and finishing; this detail has not been confirmed by an independent record.
