Kharitonov is the name Moscow-based maker Andrey Kharitonov carries on his handmade pipes. Kharitonov, who began working briar in 2019, turned this pursuit into a full-time occupation within two years; today he is counted among the most closely watched names in contemporary handmade production in Russia. What makes his pipes recognizable is the combination of textures carved into the bowl with dark-toned contrast staining.
A Long Preparation for Pipes
Records indicate he was born in Moscow in 1961 and spent his whole life in the city. His acquaintance with the pipe reaches back to his twentieth birthday, in 1981: that day he received a pipe carved from cherry wood as a gift from his brother, and for the following decades he was rarely without a pipe. During this long period of smoking he also took up repair work; he fitted new stems in place of broken ones and reinforced cracked shanks, working on worn stummels. Following the path his brother had opened, he also tried his hand at carving his own pipes from cherry wood. The real turning point came in 2019, when he noticed a shop in Moscow selling Italian briar; that same year, with blocks he acquired, he made his first pipes from briar.
Building Shape Without a Lathe
The years spent on repair had introduced him to hand tools but had not provided the equipment of pipemaking; at the outset he did not even have a separate workshop. Since classic European shapes were developed to be worked on a lathe, entering this repertoire without one was not possible for him. So his early work took a different turn from the start, toward freehand pieces — experimental shapes emerging from whatever the block allowed. The first pipes he shared on Russian pipe forums did not receive the attention he expected: critics' common point was that the shapes did not sit comfortably in the hand and appealed more to collectors than to smokers. Kharitonov then turned toward designs that put usability and grip first. This shift did not mean a return to twentieth-century shape catalogs; his measure came instead from the contemporary artisan line descending from the Danish school.
Texture, Stain, and Accent Materials
The most distinctive feature of his current work is his approach to surfaces. Instead of the customary surface finishes such as rustication and sandblasting, he places pronounced patterns carved into the briar side by side with smooth polished areas. Contrast staining built on walnut, copper, and plum tones is also considered part of his signature. He works bowls from Italian briar and stems from ebonite. For accent materials he uses silver, cupronickel, and exotic woods; his most frequent choice of ornament is fossilized mammoth ivory. He has a particular fondness for bamboo: he often achieves curves that are hard to obtain with briar and ebonite using this material instead.
Full-Time Making
Records indicate that by the close of 2020 he had completed fifty pipes; their proceeds funded his workshop equipment. In 2021 annual output reached one hundred and ten, and the volume of incoming orders was enough for him to leave his job and move to full-time making. Since then he has been seen to work more freely with design, returning to the unusual shapes of his early period. He himself says he is still searching for a style of his own; records cite Russian makers such as Viktor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Aleksey Kharmalov among the names he feels a kinship with.
