• Kokkinos — The name of a one-man workshop in Limassol. Yiannos Kokkinos carves pipes in his free time in a workshop set up above the small café he runs; by his own account, he is his country's only pipemaker. Production relies heavily on handwork, with machinery brought in only for drilling and polishing. Bowls are carved from Mediterranean briar; stems are prepared from ebonite or acrylic brought in from Germany and Italy, with metal, bamboo, and olive wood also worked where the design calls for it. Before turning to pipes, the maker studied graphic design in Greece and fine arts in Italy and worked for a time as a designer.
