KJ Pipes is a one-man pipe workshop run by Kadesh J. Swanson in Washington State, in the northwestern United States. The brand name comes from the maker's initials. Small workshops of this kind, which do not mass-produce and turn out a limited number of pieces each year, are classed in the pipe community as artisan makers; KJ Pipes is a typical example of that definition.
The Maker's Path
Born in 1989, Swanson's turn toward pipemaking came after first becoming acquainted with pipes as a consumer. The point at which the craft became his primary means of expression dates to the end of 2013; he has run his workshop in Washington State from that date onward.
Time spent alongside other makers has been decisive in Swanson's development. Profiles of him consistently report that he worked together with Steve Liskey, Jared Coles, and Jeff Gracik. This pattern of bench visits, common in the American artisan tradition, allows new makers to learn technical details directly at the workbench; in a field without a formal apprenticeship system, knowledge is largely passed on this way.
Materials and Craftsmanship
One of the standout features of KJ Pipes is its care in material selection. Bowls are made using Manno blocks from Italy; for the stem, ebonite rod from well-known German makers such as SEM and NYH is preferred. Some of the bamboo and boxwood used in shank and accent pieces is gathered and dried by the maker himself. The practice of sourcing every element separately is explained as an effort to keep quality control in his own hands. Common among small workshops, this method reduces the quality fluctuation that comes with relying on a single wholesaler; on the other hand, it naturally limits annual output, since each batch requires its own separate selection and curing process.
The design language shows the influence of the Scandinavian, and specifically Danish, school; Swanson himself lists this school among his sources of inspiration. This working approach, in which form is determined by the block's grain flow, produces pieces standing somewhere between classic measured shapes and freehand. His work includes both glossy polished and sandblasted surfaces; the workshop also prepares one-off pieces on commission.
Recognition
The brand has become known within North American collector circles mostly through pipe clubs, gatherings, and online communities. This kind of recognition, spreading by word of mouth rather than advertising, is typical of most one-person workshops in the US. According to Pipedia's record, a pipe made by Swanson was among the pieces chosen for the seven-day set prepared for the Kansas City Pipe Club's 2017 competition; this information has not been independently confirmed. The maker has also appeared as a guest on the radio programs and podcast interviews followed by the community in those same years. KJ Pipes is regarded as a small-scale workshop whose output rests in the hands of a single maker.
