Klein-Pfeifendesign is the small-scale pipe workshop run by German-born master Peter Klein under his own name. Klein trained as a carpenter, worked for many years as a technical staff member at a school, and began pipemaking as a leisure pursuit in 1988. At the end of 2007 he settled in Denmark with his family and moved his workshop to near Ringkøbing on the west coast of Jutland. For this reason the brand is claimed among both German and Danish workshops.
The Workshop's Working Order
Klein chose not to turn pipemaking into his primary livelihood, keeping carpentry as a part-time occupation so as to find room to work freely at the bench. According to records his annual output is limited to a few hundred pieces, and each pipe is shaped individually; series molds are not used. His pipes reach collectors mainly in Germany, the United States, and the Far East. This scale allows the maker to decide for himself how much time to give each piece; the workshop's recognition also owes much to word of mouth among collectors.
He also handles the sourcing of the wood he uses himself: he is known to travel to Italy's Calabria region and pick out plateau briar blocks one by one. Selling some of these blocks to fellow pipemakers has made the workshop a small raw-material source as well.
Design Language and Surfaces
Klein's work does not settle into a single style. The same bench turns out both measured English shapes and freehand forms left to the wood's grain; examples close to Italian interpretations also appear. His settling in Denmark has naturally reinforced the relationship his work bears to the flowing-line outlook of the Danish school tradition.
In surface treatment, the weight falls on smooth finishes; sandblasting is applied only to a small portion. Most pipes are drilled to accommodate a 9 mm filter. This preference is explained by filtered smoking being an established habit in the German and Central European market.
Stamp and Grading
Pipes are stamped "P. Klein" on the shank. The quality order is shown with capital letters; as the letter rises, so does the expectation for grain regularity and flawlessness of surface. At the top of the scale sits grade AA, though how far down the lower grades extend is not stated consistently in the records. In catalogs and collector listings, the letters between D and AA are the most frequently encountered.
Above the letter scale, there is also a separate tier called "Orca," reserved for pieces the maker himself considers the most successful by his own standards. At the opposite end, the workshop has also introduced a line called "Lina Pfeifen"; pipes in this line come from the same bench but are plainer pieces, with more modest expectations for craftsmanship and grading. The year this line was launched has not been confirmed by independent sources.
