L'Anatra is an Italian handmade pipe workshop that has worked in the Adriatic coastal city of Pesaro since 1998. Its full name is L'Anatra dalle Uova d'Oro: in the Italian telling of the tale known in English as "the goose that laid the golden eggs," the hero is a duck, and the brand takes its name from there. The workshop's pieces are recognizable from a distance by the small silver duck's head inlaid into the mouthpiece.
Workshop and Production
The founding year is 1998; records state Massimo Palazzi started the business that autumn, with Andrea Pascucci joining the bench in 2000. The workshop has operated in Pesaro since its founding. By the brand's own figures, around two thousand pipes are made a year; this scale falls well short of the large Italian series-production firms and places the workshop on the artisan pipe side. Products reach the American and Asian markets alongside Europe; recognition in the American market arrived noticeably later than in Europe.
The brand states it was the subject of "pipe of the year"-type selections around the Accademia Internazionale della Pipa circle in 2004, in an American magazine's selection in 2005, and in a German catalog in 2007. The details of these selections have not been independently confirmed.
The Duck's Head and Grades
The cast silver duck's head above the mouthpiece is independent of grade; it is the signature of the brand as a whole. Fitting a small identifying mark to the mouthpiece is a well-established habit in pipe making, the best known example being Dunhill's white spot. L'Anatra's, however, is not a plain dot or letter but a raised figure — a visual joke the brand plays on its own name.
The grade naming keeps up the same wit: sales records show names like "One Egg" based on egg counts. Whether the number of eggs is tied to grain quality or to body size is not something documented in any published source; from the records, only that the number establishes an ascending order can be inferred.
Lines
Sales records include the names Pettinata, Backgammon, Nirvana, Ventura, Calenda, and Gigante. Pettinata means "combed" in Italian and takes its name from the regular, comb-like impression of the rustic surface worked into the body; it is referred to as the signature texture in the brand's own promotion. Backgammon, meanwhile, is set apart by the silver band that wraps the chamber rim.
Its Place in the Pesaro School
After the 1970s, led by workshops such as Mastro de Paja and Ser Jacopo, Pesaro became the center of the line known as neoclassical; it is spoken of together with the Como circle, the other pole of Italian pipe making. In this approach, classical molds are not a binding template but a starting point to be played with. L'Anatra belongs to the next generation of that line and is known for stretching the mold a step further still: briar is used for the bodies, but the proportions and lines often depart from the accustomed measure. The prevailing view in the community is that the workshop's work adds a playful note to Pesaro's dignified elegance.
