Laxey Pipes Ltd. is an unusually large production venture for its scale, founded on the Isle of Man in the middle of the Irish Sea. Born at a time when pipe manufacture was concentrated in centers such as Saint-Claude, London, and Copenhagen, the factory was set up to bring work to the island economy, and is counted among Britain's few meerschaum workshops.

Founding and the Factory Building

The company began operating in the mid-1960s in a four-story stone building on the quay in Old Laxey. The building had not originally been designed for pipe making: archive records show it was built in 1866 by Richard Rowe, manager of the Laxey mines, as an additional grain store for the town's flour mill. After changing hands several times it passed into island government ownership in the 1960s, and from there was leased to the pipe factory. Production was spread across the building's four floors, with the stages from turning to polishing divided among them. How many people the factory employed at its busiest is not clear from archive records; accounts point to a workforce of a few dozen.

The factory's raw material came from East Africa. Laxey processed block meerschaum mined by the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation in the Amboseli basin into bowls; this material, distinct from the classic Eskişehir stone of the Mediterranean basin, supplied a significant share of the world market in the postwar period.

Brands and Stamps

The company used several trade names associated with itself: Manxpipe, Manxman, and Manxland were the principal ones. Names like "White Knight" (unfinished) and "Domino" (black or lined) were not separate brands but color and shape variants of the same line. Mouthpieces mostly bore one of two marks: a symbol combining a circle and an arrow, or the Isle of Man's coat-of-arms motif of three legs within a circle. A significant share of sales came through the factory's own shop in Laxey, sold to visitors coming to the island; the rest was distributed through pipe retailers off the island.

Names tied to the island, such as "Manx Pipes Ltd." or "Man Pipe Co.," are sometimes mistaken for separate manufacturers; in fact there is no record of any pipe factory on the Isle of Man other than Laxey. These names are seen as labels the same workshop's pipes acquired through different sales channels; it is also reported within the pipe community that Man Pipe was distributed through Comoy's of London.

Contract Manufacturing and Closure

Laxey's real significance comes less from its own brands than from the bowls it made for others. From the late 1960s until 2001, the meerschaum bowls of firms such as Peterson, Barling, and Nørding were turned here. The name of the commissioning party generally does not appear on these bowls; most often only a mark indicating the material was block meerschaum was worked in, and the same bowl could appear in different brands' catalogs with different mouthpieces. For this reason the origin of British and Irish meerschaum pipes of the era can often only be guessed at through shape and workmanship.

The depletion of the East African source sealed the business's end: the mines' yield had fallen, and alternative deposits had become inaccessible. The last Laxey meerschaum stones were released to market in May 2001. The company tried to stay afloat by turning largely toward briar pipes in the Danish school line, but the attempt did not take, and the factory closed in the summer of 2002. The building has been preserved; the company's order books, production notes, and promotional materials are kept in the island's archives.
