LCS Briars is the one-man workshop of London-based maker Simon Bosko. The brand name is not the maker's surname but a three-letter abbreviation; within the community these letters are tied to "London Calling with Simon," the YouTube channel through which Bosko became known, though the workshop has never officially published such an explanation. Pipes are individually numbered, and nearly all are made to the 9 mm filter size; the workshop is a relatively new name among Britain's dwindling ranks of independent makers.

From Channel to Bench

Bosko's relationship with pipes began first as a viewer and narrator. In the 2010s, the YouTube pipe community organized online and known for short as YTPC turned enthusiasts who had never met into a regular network of conversation; Bosko was one of the recognized faces of this network. According to records, he began experimenting with ready-made block kits at the end of 2017, and within a short time acquired his own lathe and took the work seriously. This produced an unusually open apprenticeship period, one viewers could follow step by step.

Production is a small-scale operation in which briar blocks are worked by one hand. Bosko stays faithful to the classic English repertoire — that is, measured shapes such as the billiard, lovat, and dublin — while also occasionally making sculptural, free-lined pieces. Because the scale is small, the design decision, the carving, and the finishing all fall to one hand; the difference between any two pipes remains visible for this reason as well.

Distinguishing Choices

The brand's most notable trait is its emphasis on pipes designed for a 9 mm filter; the workshop states in its own promotion that it makes all its pipes to this size unless otherwise noted. Though common on the Continent, the filtered pipe is seen less often at English workshops; Bosko has filled this gap based on his own smoking habits. Sizing the filter chamber to fit both the bowl and the shank bore calls for a particular skill discussed separately under pipe filters and systems. Filterless pieces are made too, but the brand's identity sits on its filtered line.

Two tendencies stand out in surface finishing. The first is contrast staining that makes the clean grain pattern visible; the second is the textured finish the maker calls "carve-blast," combining a carved effect with sandblasting. This texture reads more as a hand-shaped surface than one left entirely to a machine sandblast.

Grading and Numbering

LCS pipes are graded with stars. Records show examples ranging from two to five stars; since no official definition of the standard has been published, tying the star count to the flawlessness of the briar and the quality of the grain is an interpretation drawn from these records.

Every pipe also carries a sequence number, which makes the workshop's output externally traceable: given that four-digit numbers appear in the maker's own records, production has long since passed a thousand. The community also marked the completion of the thousandth pipe as a milestone. Despite its short history, LCS Briars is counted among the living examples of contemporary British workshop production.
