Directory of Latvian Pipe Brands

Directory of Latvian Pipe Brands lists, in alphabetical order, pipe makers who carry on production in Latvia. Both names on record belong to independent craftsmen working in the capital, Riga; no factory-scale manufacturer appears in the directory. Entries summarize only what can be documented, without venturing into details unsupported by sources.

Brands

• Bondarev — the bench of Aleksandr (Sasha) Bondarev, who works alone in Riga. Turning out three to six pipes a month, the maker favors Italian briar. The workshop's usual output is long-shanked straight classics; the canadian family and liverpool are the leading examples of this preference, while short-shanked models are almost never seen. Two technical details stand out in the craftsmanship: the smoke channel is bored to a four-millimeter diameter, and the air hole in the mouthpiece (stem) is finished in a cone shape. Bondarev came to pipe making by a roundabout path. After art school he considered sculpture for a while, settled instead on a technical university, and continued his working life first as a web designer, then as a software developer. Pipe making, begun as a hobby in 2011, gradually became a part-time job and eventually his sole profession.

• Senatorov — takes its name from Sergei Senatorov Fjodorovic, a Riga-born maker born in 1982. The workshop's material preference is clear: bodies are chosen from Mediterranean-basin briar, mouthpieces from German-made ebonite. Senatorov's first experiments with wood go back to childhood; at ten he carved a pipe from pine using only sandpaper and a file. He began working seriously with briar in 2006.
