Lorenzetti is a pipe workshop founded in 1934 by Otello Lorenzetti in the town of Recanati in Italy's Marche region. Starting at home with a few rented lathes and twenty to thirty pipes a day, the business grew across later generations into a family firm turning out tens of thousands of pipes a year and exporting to many countries. Production has since stopped.

The Birth of a Workshop in Recanati

In the first half of the twentieth century, Recanati was home to several small pipe workshops; Catena Remigio, named in the records, is one of them and is cited as the place where the brand's founder learned the craft. Born in 1911 in Castelnuovo, part of the town, and with schooling that ended at primary level, Otello Lorenzetti completed eighteen months of military service in Cividale, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, then began working for himself in 1934. The first workshop was part of the home, the lathes were rented, and daily output did not exceed twenty to thirty pipes. Products were delivered directly to tobacconists around Macerata, San Severino, and Civitanova Marche.

The decade following its founding was interrupted twice by the war. The founder was conscripted in 1935 and sent to units in Africa, not returning until January 1937; he was called up again in October 1940 and did not return home until 1943. Marinella, whom he married in 1940, became the second defining figure of the business during and after these years.

Turning into a Family Business

The era of rented lathes ended in 1947: the founder built, with his own means, equivalents of the machines he had been using until then, and had a craft workshop in Civitanova Marche prepare the parts that were hard to shape by hand. Production sped up and diversified as a result. The 1960s and 1970s marked the beginning of exports; the founder's children Luciano, Gabriella, and Alessandro, along with a few employees, joined the business as it opened up to markets in Europe, Africa, and America. On the matter of the brand's renown, it is reported that Sandro Pertini, the well-known pipe enthusiast who served as President of Italy, took an interest in Lorenzetti pipes.

According to information given to local press in 2014 to mark the business's eightieth year, annual production ran between twenty and thirty thousand pipes, with the main export markets being Canada, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. At that time the business was headed by the founder's youngest son, Alessandro Lorenzetti. Together with the Moretti workshop, founded in the same town in 1968, Lorenzetti is counted as one of the two addresses that made Recanati the pipe center of the Marche region.

Stamps, Series, and Craftsmanship

The pipes carry a hand-script "Lorenzetti" on the left side of the shank, with "ITALY" below it; the series name, shape number, or both appear on the right side. Restoration and inventory records mention series names such as Avitus and Macerata, along with four-digit shape numbers. A hand-script "L" mark was used on the stems.

Production is built on classic English and Italian shapes made from briar; smooth, sandblasted, and rustic finishes all appear side by side. Examples with vulcanite and acrylic stems, models decorated with silver bands, and bodies suited to 9 mm filters are all part of the known catalogue. This structure places the brand closer to the scaled-up factory pipe tradition than to workshops identified by a single maker's signature.

Current Status

Records indicate the brand's production has ended; sources give no definite closing date. The business's official website, which had stayed online for many years, is also inaccessible today. As a result, Lorenzetti pipes now appear not as new production but in collections and secondhand circulation.
