Directory of Hungarian Pipe Brands gathers, in alphabetical order, pipe names founded in Hungary or associated with Hungarian makers. The country's pipe history follows two separate lines: shops that opened in nineteenth-century Pest and carried on under the same name for generations, and factory-scale businesses founded in provincial towns in the twentieth century. Alongside these are early accounts linking meerschaum carving to Hungary; as the second entry below shows, part of these accounts has been invalidated by museum records. For the country's documented carving tradition, see the Adler workshop, and for an example of the period's ornate wooden pipes, see the entry Hungarian Kalmasche, 1850. The entries below summarize only documented facts.

Brands

  • Gallvitz — Named after its founder, Lipót Gallvitz; the business is recorded as having opened in Pest in 1880. Today the brand survives not as a production workshop but as a pipe and cigar shop run by Viktor Zöllner.

  • Karol Kovacs — For many years cited as the name of a Budapest shoemaker said to have made the first meerschaum pipe. According to the widely repeated account relayed by José Manuel Lopes, Karel Kovacs carved this pipe in 1723 from stone Count Andrássy brought back for him from a journey to the East. The account is now considered invalid: Anna Ridovics, a curator at the Hungarian National Museum, stated in writing that the museum holds no record of a meerschaum carver named Kovacs, and that neither of the two pipes claimed to have been carved in 1723-1724 is in the museum's collection. The correction is relayed by Ben Rapaport; the brand name is accordingly treated as a historical misattribution.

  • Körös Pipes — The brand's origin lies in the Nagykőrös Pipe Factory, founded in 1930 in the central Hungarian town of Nagykőrös, from which the name derives. Balázs Szabó Jr., grandson of one of the factory's founders, managed to buy the company back in 1989 following the political transformation across the former Warsaw Pact region. Since then the business has gone by the name Szabó Körös Pipe Factory.
