Directory of Malaysian Pipe Brands is a list gathering, in alphabetical order, pipe brands founded in Malaysia or run by Malaysian makers. Pipemaking in the country survives not as a factory-scale industry but as handwork carried on in one-person workshops; the number of recorded brands is accordingly small. What the two makers in this directory have in common is that both began the craft as a hobby before later turning it into a full-time occupation.
Brands
-
Abi Pipes — The name behind the brand is Abdul Muttalib Md Sidik. He took up the lathe as a hobby in 2014, and a year later left his regular job to make pipemaking his living. As of a January 2019 record, 543 pipes bearing his signature had been made to that point, reaching buyers in the United States, Sweden, Thailand, and Singapore.
-
Johnsson Ooi — The brand of a Malaysian craftsman working alone on Penang Island. Ooi began pipemaking as a side occupation in 2004, and devoted himself to it full-time after returning in 2007 from the Tyrol region of Italy. He learned both classic shapes and freehand work under Bertram Safferling. His workshop is open to custom commissions. Records indicate he won the Malaysian Good Design Award in 2013 and 2015, and the Malaysian Best Craft award in 2012 and 2013.
