Manduela is the brand under which Danish maker Manduela Riger-Kusk signs her own pipes. Known for bodies well below the usual size yet with fully settled proportions, and for colorful stems. The maker learned the trade working with Poul Ilsted, and through this line is counted among the bearers of the Svendborg Piber tradition on the island of Fyn.
A Shape Kept in Hand
The first thing that stands out in Riger-Kusk's work is scale. Chambers small enough to disappear in the palm are scaled down without breaking the proportional relationships expected of a full-size pipe, leaving a far narrower margin for error at the lathe and on the sandpaper than usual. In her shape repertoire, bulldog and dublin interpretations stand out. The multi-faceted shank work she inherited from her teacher is the second half of her signature: the faces of the shank are flattened so they meet each other along sharp lines, and the lines where these planes join have to come out perfect. She uses briar for bodies; for the stem she works materials such as ebonite and cumberland, in a range of colors. This choice of color sets her apart within the generally restrained stem sensibility of the Danish school.
The Road to Mastery
According to the account of her life given, Riger-Kusk was born in Germany and, at a young age, given up for adoption to a Danish family living on a farm in Jutland. Her first encounter with the pipe came in her post-school years, with a cheap corncob; finding that the briar pipes she liked exceeded her budget led her to the idea of making her own. Learning, while working at a museum in Svendborg in 1985-86, that Poul Ilsted lived in the same town proved the turning point, and she trained by stopping regularly at the master's workshop after work.
The Copenhagen Interlude and Return to Svendborg
The maker is known to have worked for a time in Copenhagen, at Pipe-Dan's workshop; since the staff maker there was Phil Vigen, she could only use the lathe after hours. Records indicate this arrangement began in 1990 and ended when the shop closed in 1991. Riger-Kusk then opened her own shop and workshop, but finding that the flow of visitors was eating into her lathe time, she moved in 1997 to a quieter space; from this second location, hard to heat in winter, she moved again to an apartment her former teacher had found for her. In this way she resettled in Svendborg by the mid-2000s.
Production and Recognition
Pipemaking is not her only occupation: she works on set and stage design for Danish television and film productions, and also works with sculpture, mostly in granite. Output from the lathe accordingly stays limited; records indicate annual production runs between fifty and a hundred pipes. Her work reaches collector circles mainly outside Denmark. Records also indicate the maker has taken part in slow-smoking competitions, placing in the women's category in 2009 and 2011. Producing little while carrying wide recognition is the typical position of individual workshops within the Danish school.
