Manhattan Briar Pipe Co. was an American pipe company operating in New York at the start of the twentieth century. It did not emerge from the growth of a small workshop but from an investment decision made in the years when the tobacco industry was at its most monopolistic: according to the record, it was founded in 1902 as a New York corporation by the American Tobacco Company, the era's giant tobacco firm, following an agreement reached with the owners of the Brunswick Briar Pipe Company. Details of its founding capital and address appear only in secondary compilations and are not repeated here.
The Trust's Pipe Arm
Understanding Manhattan Briar requires knowing the company behind it. American Tobacco Company was born in 1890 from the merger of a series of tobacco firms under the leadership of James B. Duke, and because it held such a large share of the market, it became popularly known simply as the "Tobacco Trust." Adding pipe manufacturing alongside cigarette and tobacco production was a natural extension of this expansionist logic.
The takeover did not happen in a single step. Although the majority of shares passed into the trust's hands within the first year, the former partners retained a sizable minority stake for a time; it is reported that these shares too were bought out in 1906, at which point the company became entirely the trust's pipe arm. Yet this arrangement did not even last five years: when the Supreme Court's 1911 ruling broke up the American Tobacco Company, Manhattan Briar continued on as a separate business. This phase, in which large capital entered pipe production, is an American tendency that can also be traced in the example of the American Smoking Pipe Co..
Products and Stamps
The company's core business was mass-produced briar pipes. In 1913 the presidency was held by John Glossinger, who had previously run American Tobacco's pipe division; under him a comprehensive promotional campaign was run focusing on high-quality briar. The collection also includes meerschaum pipes bearing the Manhattan stamp. The possibility that these examples were made by European craftsmen and restamped in America rests solely on assessments of form and workmanship; it is not documented. Offering both materials side by side was a common choice in the American market of the period.
Factories and Patents
Manufacturing began operating in New Jersey in 1905: the company settled in Jersey City under a ten-year lease, and built the factory where the pipes were finished in Marion. When the lease expired, from 1915 onward the office and factory were consolidated under a single roof in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn era is said to have been guided by a manager named W. C. Bastian, who is reported to have been granted a patent in 1910 for a chambered mouthpiece resembling the P-Lip mouthpiece of the Peterson brand; however, which patent this refers to remains unclear even in the secondary sources.
The only patent that can be traced through documentation is John Gianninoto's. This inventor, who lived in Brooklyn, was granted a patent on December 11, 1917, for a carrying mechanism that allowed spittoons to be emptied without soiling the surroundings; the document is registered to the inventor himself rather than to the company, while the information that Gianninoto was a Manhattan Briar employee rests on secondary compilations.
Final Years
The company continued to appear in local trade directories until 1921. It is accepted that it was purchased and absorbed the following year by S. M. Frank & Co.; the details of the sale are conveyed not through primary documents but through later compilations. As the brand name gradually fell out of use, Manhattan-stamped pipes today are encountered only within collector circles.
