Mastro Beraldi is the brand name given to the pipes made by Roman pipe maker Aldo Pierluigi and his family. The workshop's history stretches back to the mid-1970s, when Pierluigi began making pipes under his own name; Mastro Beraldi is this body of work redirected toward a broader buying public, particularly the North American market. The brand is a typical example of the Italian middle path that preserves workshop-scale handwork while producing on a serial basis.

The Workshop's Background

According to the record, Aldo Pierluigi began pipe making around 1976-77; the same record states that his early freehand experiments were stamped with the phrase "Per mei amici." This information has not been independently confirmed anywhere outside Pipedia. As far as can be determined, the early work was produced less for a commercial distribution network than for a close circle. In later years the family chose to present its body of work under a defined brand rather than as individually signed pieces; the name Mastro Beraldi is the result of that choice. The exact year the name first came into use is not clear in any accessible source. The workshop remained in Rome, and production continued to be run within the family.

Such transitions are common in Italy. Benches that start with a single master's signature gradually turning into family businesses is a pattern repeated many times within the short history of Italian handmade pipes.

Craftsmanship and Material

The brand's own promotional material states that the wood used is Italian briar, worked after the blocks are sorted and seasoned. The same text also claims that production relies entirely on handwork; however, no source anywhere gives a detailed account of at what stage the workshop uses machinery versus hand tools. In practice, the result is that small differences in proportion can be seen between two bodies bearing the same model name; the grain appearance also varies from piece to piece.

Sources do not fully agree on mouthpiece material. The brand's own text reports the use of ebonite, reinforced against breakage by a special internal pin; some distributor promotions instead speak of molded, hand-finished vulcanite mouthpieces with a Teflon-bodied tenon. This contradiction remains unresolved today; it is not known whether the two descriptions belong to different periods or different lines.

Information on the stamping scheme relies largely on restoration articles. According to these accounts, the underside of the shank carries the brand name, the country name, and a model number; because the arrangement is simple, recognizing the brand on the secondhand market is relatively easy.

The Mario Grandi Line

In the mid-2000s the Pierluigi family opened a second line under the name Mario Grandi; these pipes are reported to have been distributed only through online auctions from December 2006 onward. The workshop has stated that Mario Grandi is indeed a living maker, but this person's existence cannot be independently confirmed; the possibility that the name is merely a line label remains open. Within collector circles the line is regarded as a narrower-scope extension of Mastro Beraldi.

Whether the brand is active today carries a similar uncertainty: the pipes continue to appear in retailer catalogs, but this has not been confirmed through any up-to-date statement from the workshop or a functioning official site.
