Mastro de Paja is a handmade pipe workshop that has operated since 1972 in Pesaro, on Italy's Adriatic coast. Over more than fifty years it has changed hands several times, and it has taken on its present character during the long tenure of Alberto Montini, who has run the business for many years. Production is carried out in Pesaro under the company Creazioni Italiane.

Founding and Name

Giancarlo Guidi made pipes as an enthusiast for a while before turning the business into a registered workshop in 1972. In the brand name, "mastro" means "master" in Italian; "de Paja" is the local dialect form of the nickname "Pajetta," which Guidi's friends gave him because of his curly hair. Shortly after founding, Giannino Spadoni, who also sold pipes among other products, joined as a partner; for a period the business was known as "Mastro de Paja di Guidi e Spadoni." From its earliest years the workshop was known for shapes that departed from classic molds.

Changes in Ownership

The partnership ended in 1981. Guidi left the business and, the following year, founded his own brand, Ser Jacopo, also in Pesaro. According to the record, Spadoni, who remained with the workshop, soon ran into financial trouble; Pesaro businessman Terenzio Cecchini took over management by acquiring a majority stake. After Spadoni also left, Cecchini put Alberto Montini, then an accountant in his thirties, in charge of the business. Montini went from employee to manager and partner, and after Cecchini's death became the workshop's sole owner. Under him, annual production volume was deliberately reduced, while sales spread beyond Italy. According to the manufacturer, about two thousand pipes are made a year today, the majority of which go abroad.

Stamps and Grades

At Mastro de Paja, quality information is conveyed through stamps burned into the body. The brand rebuilt this system from scratch around 2015, abandoning the old scheme on the grounds that it squeezed every pipe into a single finish group.

Current System

The mouthpiece of the ART, SPECIAL, and ELITE collections carries a silver or gold sun, while the Classica collection carries a silver or brass dot. The number of suns stamped on the body indicates the grade of beauty; the criteria assessed together include length, surface finish, difficulty of shaping the model, and decoration. Examples bearing no sun at all form the base grade of the series. Straight-grained bodies are called "fiammata" and are graded between one and three suns depending on the quality of the grain. According to the manufacturer's announcement, the year of production has also been marked on the pipes since 2025.

Pre-2015 Classification

Under the old system the catalog was grouped into three tiers: Limited Edition, comprising numbered and special commissioned pieces; Elite Collection, finished entirely by hand; and Classica Collection, machine-worked in its first stage and hand-finished thereafter. Surface information was given through combinations of letters and numbers:

Stamp

Meaning

0B

Fully rusticated

1B

Sandblasted

2D

Smooth body with small rusticated sections

3A

Smooth body stained brown-orange

3B, 3C

Naturally finished smooth body with good grain

F

Straight grain

The red-stained finish was called Ruber, the brown-stained finish Castanea. Examples decorated with silver, gold, or precious stones were further set apart by the letters P, N, L, S, and G.

Its Place in the Pesaro School

Mastro de Paja is considered the first link in the generation that turned Pesaro into one of the centers of Italian handmade pipe making; Ser Jacopo, which Guidi founded after leaving, also grew out of the same circle. Briar is used for the bodies. In terms of scale and working method, the workshop sits closer to the artisan pipe tradition than to the large Italian firms that mass-produce.
