Matzhold is the handmade pipe brand Austrian master Peter Matzhold (b. 1952) signs with his own name. Production is carried out in a one-man workshop set up in the countryside north of Graz, in the southeastern Austrian state of Styria, and is limited to a few hundred pieces a year. At this scale, the brand belongs not to factory production but to the side of pipes made by a single master's hand.
From Architecture to the Pipe Bench
Matzhold's first profession was architecture; he completed his studies in Graz and worked in the field for a few years. He also tried his hand at carving pipes during those years, without commercial intent, for pieces he intended to use himself. According to the account, the turning point was meeting a gallery owner in Basel and exhibiting his pipes there; after this exhibition he gave up architecture and turned to the bench. According to the record, he has worked as a full-time pipe maker since 1978. He did not learn the craft under a master but progressed on his own through a long period of trial and error; his name first became known within Austrian and German pipe circles.
Workshop and Production Principles
The workshop sits right next to the master's home; the briar stock is also kept in the same place. Annual production is limited to about two hundred pipes, and the bodies are carved from Italian briar. The brand's best-known rule is a ban on fillers: no pipe leaves the workshop with a flaw covered by putty. Pieces found to have a flaw on the chamber wall or in the smoke channel are discarded even if they have reached the final stage of production; the same rigor applies to drilling errors. By the master's own account, only about sixty percent of the briar blocks (ebauchon) he begins working end up becoming pipes. The workshop also takes on pipe repair and restoration; pieces sent from all over Austria, including English factory pipes, are worked on here. Custom commissions made to a customer's own drawing are also part of production.
Formal Language and Surface
Matzhold pipes sit somewhere between classic molds and freehand; some do not fit standard shape nomenclature. Blocks are chosen for straight or cross grain, and the body lines are kept understated. Mouthpieces are hand-cut and made of ebonite; the master's frequent go-to form is the half-saddle, which softens the transition from body to mouthpiece. Straight-topped mouthpieces running parallel to the top of the chamber are also used. Some pipes feature spacers of olive wood, others horn shank extensions. The usual finish is a tone from light brown to orange, polished with carnauba wax; sandblasted examples are also found.
Stamp
The pipes carry the name "Matzhold" on the underside of the shank, along with a phrase indicating the place of production and a shape number. It is stated that the letters next to the stamp indicate quality grade, with the mark "CU" corresponding to the top grade; the full ordering of the grades has not been independently confirmed.
