McGimpsey Pipes is the brand of a small pipe workshop run single-handedly by Matt Brannon in Tulsa, in the US state of Oklahoma. The founding year is not on record; the brand's name begins appearing in community documents in the 2010s. This is not mass production but a working method in which each piece is shaped individually; in this respect the workshop is counted among the growing generation of independent North American makers after the 2000s.

Working Method

It is known, according to the maker's own promotional text, that Brannon came to pipe making through woodworking and turning; this account has no independent confirmation. The workshop's scale is one person, so every stage from design to final polish comes together in the same hand. At this scale of workshop, rather than a fixed model catalog, an approach is adopted where work proceeds piece by piece, with each body shaped according to the grain of the block. Because there is no coherent history of the brand, what is known is limited to the maker's promotional texts and records kept by the pipe community. Such scattered documentation is a common situation for many American makers whose names have become known within online communities.

Materials

A distinguishing feature of McGimpsey pipes is that a single piece can bring together materials from several countries; the records mention materials sourced from Italy, Germany, China, and the United States.

The briar used in the bodies is Italian in origin. The blocks are cut and given an initial cure in the country of origin, then undergo a second seasoning at the workshop once they reach Oklahoma. This additional aging is a common practice aimed at regulating the wood's moisture to shape its smoking behavior.

Mouthpieces are not bought ready-made but are hand-cut. Either German ebonite or vintage bakelite rod is used for this; among mouthpiece materials, these two differ in hardness and in the feel they leave in the mouth. Decorative rings are recorded to use mammoth ivory, bamboo, boxwood, exotic root cross-sections, and various types of horn, chiefly Alaskan muskox, as well as pre-ban ivory.

Stamp and Place within the Community

Every pipe is stamped with the brand logo along with the year of production, which makes the pieces easier to date. According to the record, Brannon made one of the seven pipes selected for the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club's 2013 contest set; such selections are events where makers known within the artisan pipe field come together. This information appears only in community sources.

The brand's website is not currently live, and whether production continues is not known. McGimpsey-signed pipes are counted among the workshops represented by a small number of examples within the global network of briar makers.
