MeerQueen Meerschaum Pipes is the brand name a Turkish workshop that carves block meerschaum in Eskişehir uses when presenting its products abroad. The same business is also known as MeerschaumStore, after the sales site it opened in 1999; MeerQueen is the umbrella identity brought to the fore in recent years and used with a registered mark. In its own publications the brand carries the phrase "Est. 63" and states the business was founded in 1963 by a family elder surnamed Uzkesici.
A Conflict in the Records
The founding year does not converge on a single point. While the company's own statement gives 1963 and the Uzkesici name, the Pipedia record, based on the José Manuel Lopes compilation, ties the business to 1908 and the name Bahadır Baykal, writing that the business then passed to his son Kural. The gap between the two dates exceeds half a century, and neither has been confirmed by an independent document such as a trade registry. Here, the 1963 date the company has consistently repeated in its own publications is taken as the baseline, and 1908 is noted as an unconfirmed record.
Workshop and Masters
The business states it works with about twelve carvers, six of whom it counts as masters: Tekin Gök, İsmail Bağlan, Ramazan Bağlan, Medet Kara, Mehmet Başsav, and Salim Şener. Every piece bears the signature of the master who carved it, so more than one hand and more than one style are gathered under a single brand name. The raw material used is block stone from the regional deposits that have fed Eskişehir meerschaum carving for centuries; the business states it does not work with material made by pressing meerschaum chips with a binder.
Grading and Construction
The brand's best-known practice is its own grading scale. The quality of the raw stone and the carving craftsmanship are scored separately, each out of six; the top tier is shown as "6/6." In construction, rather than the traditional screw thread, a push-fit connection favored on briar pipes is used instead: the tenon that seats into the shank is made of Teflon, the stem of acrylic, and a 9 mm filter socket is opened when requested. The finished pipe is saturated with several successive coats of natural beeswax. The business states it offers a lifetime warranty on the meerschaum body and reaches more than one hundred and eighty countries; these statements have not been independently audited.
Carving Repertoire
The bulk of the product range is figurative carving. Alongside classic pipe shapes, animal heads, dragon and claw motifs, human faces, botanical decoration, and fantastical characters are gathered into separate series. Shapes such as the calabash and the long-shanked churchwarden, as well as cigar and cigarette holders, are also part of the repertoire. In addition, custom commissions in which a customer's portrait, coat of arms, or emblem is carved into the stone form a separate line. Because of meerschaum's porous structure, every pipe takes on a color ranging from honey to dark brown as it is used; on relief surfaces this change is held to make the details of the carving more legible over time.
