Moretti is a handmade pipe workshop founded in 1968 by Igino Moretti in the town of Recanati, in Italy's Marche region. The founder's son-in-law, Marco Biagini, has headed production for more than forty years; today his son Luca joins him as well. Working olive wood and bog oak alongside briar, and a small briar dot inlaid into the stem, are the brand's most distinctive features.

The Pipe Tradition in Recanati

Pipe making in this small Marche town near the Adriatic is considered to date back to the 1850s. At the start of the twentieth century, the town's established workshop was Hully Briars. According to the manufacturer's own history, the firm worked with about forty employees, made half of the pipes it produced for other companies, and sold the remaining half under the brand BEP-SON, derived from the first syllables of the owners' names, Beppe and Sonia. Igino Moretti and his wife joined the workshop in its most crowded period, when the number of employees approached fifty; Igino gradually became its principal pipe maker.

Hully Briars's closure brought Moretti to the brink of a career change: he had passed the railway examination, and working as a train engineer offered a concrete livelihood. Choosing to stay in the craft, the master founded his own brand, Moretti Recanati, in 1968. Sources give 1950 as the year Hully Briars closed; the manufacturer's own history does not state a year.

The Marco Biagini Era

Marco Biagini, who married Igino Moretti's daughter, is said to have been a former gendarme (carabiniere) who began making pipes alongside his father-in-law in the early 1980s, gradually taking over the workshop entirely. In the brand's early years, its livelihood depended largely on contract production for other firms; Biagini gradually reduced this work, consolidated production under his own brand, and moved toward distributing directly, without intermediaries. The brand name was simplified in the mid-2000s to simply "Moretti."

The workshop's way of working suits this scale: the block is not fixed to a lathe jig; the chamber and smoke channel are drilled with the wood held by hand. This slow-moving method, demanding a high degree of manual precision, is a detail underscored both by the maker and by those who write about the brand.

Materials and Series

Moretti pipes are made from Italian briar naturally aged for at least ten years; sources state that the blocks used come from Calabria. The workshop also works with olive wood and with bog oak (morta); it is counted among the few workshops able to work bog oak. The maker states that no chemicals are used in the finishing, and that color is left entirely natural.

The catalog is tiered according to surface treatment and grain quality: rustic and sandblast pipes, smooth groups separated by size number, above these the Collection and Emblem series, and at the top the Marco Biagini series bearing the master's own name. Olive wood and bog oak bowls are grouped under separate headings; 9mm filtered models and reverse-calabash examples are also available. The top series is represented by only a limited number of pipes each year.

Identifying Clues

The small briar dot inlaid on the side of the stem is regarded as the brand's hallmark. For a long time the word "Recanati" appeared below the brand name in the mark; this line has not been used on pipes made since the mid-2000s, and collectors treat this as a rough dating clue. Another known preference of the workshop is leaving the interior surface of the chamber without excessive sanding; the aim, as reported, is to let the carbon layer build up more quickly. Biagini's practice of not filling sand pits in the briar with putty, and instead setting aside blocks with serious flaws from the start, is also frequently cited. In all these respects, Moretti sits closer to the artisan pipe tradition than to the large Italian firms that mass-produce.
