Mountbatten is a pipe brand associated with the Charatan workshop in London. Today it appears only in the secondhand market, mostly as examples that have undergone repair. No separate founding or closing date has been recorded for the brand; nearly everything known about it has been gathered from the marks on surviving pipes and from collector correspondence.

Charatan's Secondary Names

It was common practice in the English pipe industry for large workshops to release output falling outside their main lines under other names. Charatan is among the firms that resorted to this; Ben Wade, whose English rights it took over, is one of the brands serving this function. Mountbatten has long been placed in the same category, under the heading "Charatan's second quality."

As the term has settled into the community's usage, a second quality is a pipe that, carrying some flaw in material or workmanship, cannot bear the main brand's name. That such flaws are not regularly seen on Mountbatten-marked bowls is the starting point of the objection that this definition does not fit the brand well.

The Apprenticeship Narrative

Another explanation that has gained currency ties the name to Charatan's training system. According to this account, Mountbattens are not flawed bowls but pipes that emerged during the period when apprentices trained under the masters began working on their own; too new to bear the main brand's name, yet far from being too poor to sell. The same account holds that the transition from apprenticeship to mastery was rare, and that the brand therefore remained at a narrow production volume.

The source of this explanation is a single collector's article, quoted and requoted over the years until it settled into place; it has not been confirmed by a factory record, a catalog, or an independent document. It should therefore be read not as established fact but as an account the community has adopted. The workmanship of surviving pipes and the briar used, at least, do not contradict the idea that production took place within Charatan's circle.

Marks and Identification

Two mark arrangements are documented in repair records. In one group, only "MOUNTBATTEN" is read on the shank, with "MADE IN ENGLAND" below it. In the other group, the quality name "ROYAL" is added below the brand name, and the origin stamp is struck as "MADE IN LONDON ENGLAND." Which is earlier is not certain; the sequence is for now only a guess based on the resemblance drawn with Charatan marks.

The shape numbers are three-digit values resembling Charatan's, but no brand-specific list of the numbers is known. Both hard rubber (vulcanite) and acrylic stems are found among examples; a single repair record notes a small inlaid "M" on the stem, though whether this was a common practice is unknown. How stem material is read for dating purposes is covered in the stem materials article.

All of this makes Mountbatten difficult to date. Since no year code, catalog, or serial record is known for the brand, the only available basis is the form of the marks and the workmanship of the bowl. Examples bearing the London origin mark can be said to have been produced in England; beyond that, giving a year range is not currently possible. This uncertainty is the natural result of the brand being recognized through the pipes themselves rather than through records.
