Murf Sculptured Pipes: Sculpted American Pipes

Murf O'Dean's solo sculptural pipe bench in California. The first pipe was carved in 1973, a long hiatus followed a 1983 national carving award, and production resumed in 2016.

Murf Sculptured Pipes is the name behind the pipes signed by Murf O'Dean, who lives in Santa Barbara, California. The name describes not a commercial business but a one-man bench; O'Dean himself describes what he does as a pursuit rather than a trade. The bench's defining trait is its approach to form: one-off designs that step outside classical proportions, treating the bowl and shank as if they were a piece of sculpture. That is why the brand name carries the word "sculptured."

A Pursuit Born from a Gift

The first pipe was made in 1973 as a Christmas gift for his father. The material was a block of African meerschaum from a ready-made carving kit bought at a Tinder Box shop. Tinder Box was a pipe and tobacco chain founded in Santa Monica in 1928 by Ed Kolpin, later spreading through franchising into shopping malls; kits pairing a raw block with basic tools were sold on those shelves.

The technical know-how came from a pipe repairman working at a shop in San Diego. In those years O'Dean, studying applied physics at the University of California, San Diego, put pipes he designed on consignment in shops to help fund his education. His career, however, unfolded not at the pipe bench but in science and engineering.

The 1983 Award and the Hiatus

By one account, the Tinder Box chain, together with the long-established pipe makers of France's Saint-Claude, ran competitions open to amateur carvers for several years. O'Dean entered a few times, made it through the regional rounds, and won the national grand prize in 1983. As the prize, he and his wife were sent to Saint-Claude in 1984, where he met leading figures of the French pipe industry. Records say the winning pipe was displayed for a year afterward in the town's pipe museum.

In December of that same year his first daughter was born, and carving was set aside for a long time. The bench was only rebuilt after retirement in 2016; all of today's output belongs to this second period.

Working Method

The bench's method includes a step familiar from sculptors' studios: for complex designs, a clay maquette is made before moving to wood. This lets proportions and posture be tested before any irreversible cuts are made. Even so, the final form is not fixed by the maquette; as carving proceeds, grain direction and hardness variation in the block can take the design somewhere else. Briar is the primary material for the bowl; bog oak, oak that has sat in a bog for thousands of years, is also among the materials used. Mouthpieces are shaped individually for each pipe.

The bench does not take commissions; each piece emerges purely at the maker's own discretion. The pipes occasionally appear at gatherings such as the West Coast Pipe Show in Las Vegas. In this respect, Murf Sculptured Pipes stands as an example of the amateur strand that has run through the American handmade pipe scene since the 1970s.
