Nils Thomsen Pipes is the workshop and attached shop of German pipe maker Nils Thomsen, working around the Treptow area of Berlin. It is counted among the few addresses in the city focused on pipes, pipe tobacco, and pipe accessories; within the community it is best known for the handmade briar pipes coming off Thomsen's own bench. The brand name carrying the founder's name directly shows that the operation is less a corporate manufacturer than a one-man workshop. Having both the bench and the shopfront under one roof has, over time, turned the workshop into a gathering point for pipe enthusiasts in the city.
Workshop and Production
Work in the shop proceeds piece by piece rather than from series molds: every pipe is shaped individually, so no two bodies are identical even under the same model name. The main raw material is briar root. According to common opinion in the community, alongside classic rounded lines, Thomsen's work has a distinct place for sharp-ridged bodies cut with flat planes; this tendency sits close to the free-design approach of the freehand tradition. For comparison: while Berlin's other well-known pipe name, Design Berlin, works at factory scale, production here is entirely bench work.
Place in Berlin's Pipe Scene
Thomsen is known not just as a maker but as a figure who has gathered a community around himself. On 3 April 2003, a group of pipe enthusiasts came together around him to found Tabakskollegium Berlin; the club takes its name from the old Prussian tobacco-collegium tradition and continues its regular meetings in Treptow. Thomsen later took on the club's chairmanship and has taken part in presenting the "Goldene Kollegiumspfeife" award given to contributors to the pipe world. Pipe-making workshops held at his shop are said to have played a part in drawing several new makers into the craft in Germany. The maker has also appeared as a guest on Brian Levine's radio program.
The Road to the Bench
Thomsen's arrival at pipe making does not run through the usual craft apprenticeship. By one account he served in the East German army until the late 1980s, and after writing a paper at the military academy, his future in the army became uncertain; the fall of the Berlin Wall closed this chapter for good.
Generations of woodworking and building-trade skill in the family became the foundation for what followed. Thomsen set up a small company doing fine carpentry and wall work; records say the company grew enough to take on jobs in several cities and reach a sizeable workforce. In 2001, at the height of the company's activity, he suffered a serious lung illness. After this he gave up the construction business and moved into a shop with a workshop attached, turning the pipe carving he had until then done for himself and his friends into his primary trade. The brand's old official website is no longer accessible today; its pipes continue to appear in German retailers' maker listings.
