Oppenheimer Pipe is the name of the industrial group that grew out of an import-export house founded in 1860 by a London-based merchant family, and that formed the backbone of British pipe production in the first half of the twentieth century. It is known less for pipes bearing its own name than for the brands it purchased and the factories it established.
From Trading House to Factory
According to records, the firm was founded in 1860 by the Oppenheimer brothers and their partner Louis Adler; sources differ over which brother stood at the head of the founding, between the names Charles and Adolph. The company at first did not make pipes, but carried the output of continental European workshops to Britain and imperial markets. In subsequent decades, the division of labor among the partners changed and management consolidated into fewer hands; during this period the firm prepared the ground for the shift from trading to manufacturing.
In 1902 the company acquired the French maker Marechal, Ruchon & Cie, and with it the GBD brand. A year later, in 1903, it opened its own pipe factory in London. According to accounts, the plant only reached the capacity envisioned at its founding once the demand generated by the First World War arrived; it stood idle in the pre-war years.
Gathering of Brands
The real growth came after the war, through the acquisition of long-established London houses that had fallen into difficulty. Adolph Frankau & Co, founded in 1847 and maker of BBB pipes, passed into Oppenheimer's hands in the 1920s. In the interwar period, Loewe & Co. and Dr. Plumb's also came under the group's control; Comoy's of London joined the same roof at a later date. The years of joining are not given precisely in the records, but the outcome is clear: a single capital group came to hold, simultaneously, a series of well-known stamps that appeared to be rivals.
The group also put pipes on the market under its own name. Early production examples bear the mark "A. Oppenheimer & Co." and the name Keystone; on these pipes the mold stamp most often reads "Keystone — London England." This stamp is one of the few clues that ties a pipe directly to the group's own production, for collectors.
The Cadogan Umbrella
As acquisitions multiplied, management chose to gather them all under a single investment company. Cadogan Investments Ltd took its name, according to accounts, from Cadogan Square, where the company's London offices were located. Sources differ on the founding date, between the 1920s and 1930s; what is certain is that in the interwar period the brands attained a structure legally separate but commercially managed as one. Other English stamps, such as Orlik, were brought under this same umbrella in later years.
The Oppenheimer name gradually withdrew from commercial use, and the business's continuation ran through Cadogan. After the 1980s, production was consolidated into a single facility at Southend-on-Sea on the Essex coast; the stamps the group had acquired continued to live on at this factory even after their own workshops closed. The shape numbers and stamp arrangements of the old London houses were also largely preserved. Today, collectors trying to make sense of the stamp and shape-number systems of English factory pipes often trace their way back to this chain of mergers that Oppenheimer built a century ago.
