Papa Bear's Pipes is the one-man pipe bench of American maker Tim Beaumont in Northeast Ohio. The brand is sometimes referred to in sales records as "Papa Bear's Briars" and simply as "Beaumont"; product listings give Fowler, Ohio, as the place of manufacture. The bench was born not as a planned venture but as a byproduct of a woodworking pursuit.

From Woodworking to a Pipe Bench

The bench's origin goes back to 2018. Beaumont had left his primary job that year and settled into a rural wood workshop; his first pieces there were not pipes but furniture he made for his children. The move into pipes began with a trial run using a piece of walnut found in the workshop; in the next attempt the material switched to briar. The early setup was limited to a rasp and a hand sander, meaning the work was largely done by hand. The pipes that accumulated went first not to sale but to family and acquaintances; the bench opening to customers came after that. Records do not agree on exactly which year the first pipe was made; some listings give the start as 2021.

This path is a common pattern on the American pipe scene. Workshops set up after a career change or retirement, as with examples like Clemons and Schoonmaker, are most often fed not by formal craft training but by a habit of woodworking. For the broader outline of this country's large amateur-to-professional generation, see the Pipe Making in the United States entry.

Shape and Craftsmanship

Beaumont's catalog does not move along a single line. From the established shape repertoire come classics like billiard, dublin, apple, brandy, and volcano; alongside these are looser bodies such as egg, calabash, and cutty, as well as freehand interpretations. The maker is said to be influenced by contemporary masters of the Danish school. Both smooth and sandblasted finishes are used on the surface; the brand's visibility owes much to work on the sandblast side.

The distinguishing element is the choice of ferrule and spacer placed between the bowl and the mouthpiece. Product listings mention native woods resembling walnut alongside strongly grained woods such as lacewood, tulipwood, and spalted poplar, as well as organic materials like horn and mammoth ivory. Cumberland and ebonite are favored for mouthpieces. For the general framework of this kind of material play, see the mouthpiece spacers entry.

The bench does not rely solely on ready stock but also works to order; repair work is also carried out. The workshop is located on the family's farm in Northeast Ohio, and records put annual output at around a hundred pipes. Beaumont also attends a handful of pipe shows each year. This scale places the brand among contemporary American benches turned out by a single hand rather than a workshop running series production.
