Pipa Croci is a pipe workshop founded in 1983 in the city of Mantua, Lombardy, by Paolo Croci and Gianni Croci. Over time, the founding date came to be seen as the brand's hallmark: pipes coming out of the workshop are stamped with the marque's name followed by the words "dal 1983." Croci is remembered as an operation that stayed small alongside Italy's large factories, basing its production on hand-shaping.
Classification and Series
The workshop's best-known feature is placing every finished pipe within a seven-tier quality order. Starting from the bottom, the tiers are named Pipa Croci, Amica, True, True I, Quality Street, Starlight, and Golden Flame; the classification weighs how well the shape settles, the character of the briar, and the appearance of the grain. Golden Flame, the top tier, is reserved for the rare piece the workshop considers exceptional.
Beyond the quality tiers there are also series grouped by design. Normale, Artistica, Gran Camino, and Calumet form the core of these series; combining these names in pairs and triples (for instance, Calumet Gran Camino Artistica) produces a long family of names. According to Pipedia, a limited run of 150 pieces was prepared in 2003 for the workshop's twentieth anniversary; this information has not been confirmed in another source.
Material and Shape
Croci pipes are worked from seasoned Italian plateau briar. Plateau is the piece cut from the burl's outer layer near the bark, where the grain shows most clearly; because the rough natural surface at the top can be preserved, it lends itself to freehand work. This freehand line was the workshop's starting point, later joined by classic models that hand-reinterpret traditional molds. Classic models are distinguished by a letter-number code: A1 for billiard, F1 for apple, H1 for dublin, and so on. Various small briar objects sold around the pipe are also carved in the same workshop. Community sources put annual production at around three thousand pieces; even this unofficial figure leaves the workshop far behind industrial makers such as Savinelli.
Contract Work and Later Period
Croci has also worked under names other than its own. In the early 2000s, privately labeled pipes were prepared for the American company DDD Pipe, while the Spanish distributor Siro Taioli had models made under his own name. The most talked-about product of the Taioli collaboration is the nine-pipe Templar collection, dedicated to the nine knights said to have founded the Knights Templar.
The brand is reported to have later come under the Molina group. The year of the transition is not consistent across sources; some records give 2012, others the late 2000s. Today, Croci-stamped pipes are found mainly in the secondhand market.
