PipesMD Pipes is the name of the signature under which American maker Charles "Charlie" Sharp gathers the pipes made by his own hand. Records give Rio Rancho, in the state of New Mexico, as the workshop's address. PipesMD is not a factory-scale brand; it is one of the small workshops built around a single bench, of which there were growing numbers in the United States in the second half of the 20th century.
A Maker Who Came from the Machine Shop
Sharp did not enter pipe making from wood but from metal. He spent most of his working life in tool-and-die work and machining. This background carries over directly into pipe making: both the smoke channel and the stem socket demand precise alignment, an area where years spent at the lathe and milling machine pay off directly. Such a career shift is not uncommon among independent American makers; a good share of the names who turned to pipe making in the postwar period learned their trade either in a woodshop or in a machine shop.
Records show he took over a tobacco shop that changed hands in the eastern part of the country in 1971 and used it as a bench where he could display his own pipes. The shop closed in 1980, but production continued.
The New Mexico Period
After the shop closed, Sharp moved his workshop to New Mexico and continued production there. Besides pipes, he also made fountain pens from exotic woods and acrylic; acrylic is a plastic also widely used among stem materials in pipe making. His work was promoted largely online, through a dedicated promotional site.
By the maker's own description, pipes are made to order from briar burls of Corsican and Algerian origin. These two regions long served as Europe's main source of raw material for pipe making after the briar revolution; Algerian briar was very common in the mid-20th century, and supply became increasingly difficult in later years. That an American workshop cites these two names is a sign it drew its raw material from the European trade chain.
No fixed model catalog is known. As is customary in one-person workshops, shape is determined by the order and by the grain of the burl on hand; the resulting production pattern is that of a small-volume bench working directly with customers.
State of Knowledge
Almost everything known about PipesMD rests on a short promotional text written by the maker himself; independent documentation is next to nonexistent. The promotional site fell out of use over time, and those asking about the brand on pipe forums have likewise been unable to find detailed information. Stamp forms, production numbers, and the workshop's current status are undocumented; for this reason PipesMD is counted among the workshops known not for their catalog but solely through their founder's professional story.
