The Directory of Polish Pipe Brands gathers, in alphabetical order, pipe brands established in the country or run by Polish makers. The center of gravity of Polish pipe making is the southeastern city of Przemyśl; records trace this tradition back roughly a century, to the work started by Wincenty Swoboda. The chain of makers who trained in the Walat brothers' workshop extends down to today's one-man workshops, and some of the entries below can be traced to this family tree. Brands with no detailed information in the records are also listed by name. Swiss Pipe, included in the list, is not of Polish origin; it appears in this compilation because of its place in brand catalogs, and this is noted in its entry as well.
Brands
-
B&B — A workshop run since 1996 by Artur and Mariusz Bednarczyk, based near Przemyśl. Alongside pipes, cigarillos are also made; materials used include briar as well as pear wood and other wood and shrub species. Most production steps are not left to machinery, so no two pieces turn out exactly alike. Natural wood stains and waxes are preferred for surface finishing; the workshop considers itself a continuation of Przemyśl's roughly century-old pipe-making tradition.
-
Dominik Pipes — Carries the signature of Dominik Kobryń. Kobryń's first contact with pipes came through a piece he bought at a flea market in 1993, and he finished his own first pipe in December 2016. He names Wojtek Pastuch as his teacher. He sources his briar from Mimmo Romeo, and shapes his mouthpieces mainly from ebonite and Cumberland rod, occasionally acrylic. Technically solid, he focuses on one-off pieces that do not resemble one another.
-
Filar — Ryszard Filar is counted among the senior makers of Polish pipe making. He entered the trade at the Walat brothers' workshop, where he worked alongside Ryszard Kulpiński. After Ludwik Walat's death, the two founded their own firm in 1981, then split in 1983 to continue on their own; the two workshops are located on the same street in Przemyśl. Filar favors classic-leaning shapes over freehand ones, producing in small batches with smooth or fully or partially textured (rustication) surfaces. He stamps his pipes with an "F" inside a circle.
-
JSG — Belongs to a Polish maker who signs his pipes with the letters "JSG." The maker presents himself not as an experienced craftsman but as someone at the start of the road; he highlights his interest in briar's grain and the inner drive that led him to handwork, stating that each new pipe turns out better than the last. Alongside making, he also takes on repair work, and does not shy away from taking on the most difficult jobs as long as there is a chance of saving the piece.
-
Parol — Marek Parol has been firing clay pipes in Przemyśl since 1991–1992, reviving this forgotten craft as a second occupation. He uses a type of clay that takes on a reddish tone when fired. His range includes historical shapes ("Reprints") remade from old molds he was able to rescue from the Gambier factory in Givet, France, as well as his own models bearing figures and portraits of well-known contemporary people. He worked for a time alongside Ryszard Filar; his pipes adapting classic wooden shapes to clay are counted among his most notable work. These pipes have double-walled bowls and are said to deliver a cool smoke.
-
Rogrus — The signature of Robert Gruszczyński, who works in Warsaw. A fine arts graduate, the maker has at different times worked as a sculptor, painter, and restorer of antique sculpture and furniture. He works with stone and clay alongside briar, producing carved and free-form compositions with dense ornament and measured construction. His sources of inspiration include the work of Kent Rasmussen and Hiroyuki Tokutomi. The brand emblem is the stylized letters "rg" inside a circle.
-
Stokkebye — Names the pipe wing of Peter Stokkebye International Ltd., known on the tobacco side; the company's parent, Orlik Tobacco Company, is considered Denmark's largest tobacco firm. Making of the pipes has been undertaken by Jørgen Larsen since the 1970s. The top grade in the ranking is marked "AAA"; on the stamp, the letters "PS" nearly overlap.
-
Swiss Pipe — Traces back to 1941, to a cooperative founded by a group of craftsmen who split off from the Bru-Bu factory. The brand later passed to Stich, a company making wooden furniture and craft goods; this company also produced a limited number of pipes, mainly replicas of older pieces. As its name suggests, the brand is of Swiss origin, and it enters this list not because of a Polish connection but because of its place in brand catalogs, as noted in its entry as well.
-
Worobiec — A family workshop founded in Przemyśl; the business was started in 1954 by Paweł Worobiec and continued single-handedly after 1979 by his son Henryk Worobiec. Over Henryk Worobiec's more than half-century as a maker, his awards include honorable mentions at the national craft exhibitions held in Kielce in 1985 and in Kraków in 1986 and 1987, and a certificate of recognition given in 1989 by the Polish Federation of Pipe Smokers' Clubs.
-
Wozniak Pipes — The brand Rafał Woźniak has run since 2014. He uses mainly briar and ebonite, occasionally also bog oak and acrylic mouthpieces. Each pipe is shaped individually with basic hand tools. Woźniak mostly follows his own design ideas, occasionally trying his hand at interpreting other makers' approaches to shape. He marks his pipes with the signature "R.Woźniak."
-
Zembrowski Pipes — The name for pipes signed by Tomasz Zembrowski. No further detail about the brand appears in the records; the only documented facts are the maker's name and the brand's existence.
