The names on record point less to large factory production than to one-man benches and lines commissioned by tobacconists under their own name: alongside Lisbon and Porto, provincial towns such as Covilhã and Grândola also appear on the list. Brands

• Cardador — An old Portuguese brand taking its name from the now-deceased José Bandeira Cardador. Its best-known products on record are pipes with figures from the Estado Novo period carved into the bowl; Estado Novo ("New State") is the name of the authoritarian regime headed by Salazar. The stamp is formed by the word "CARDADOR" with the addition of the Lisbon and Bandeira registrations.

• Casimiro — Manuel Fernandes Casimiro, a cattle herder in the village of Canal Caveira in Grândola municipality, is a craftsman who carves pipes in his spare time. His toolkit consists of just three pieces: a pocketknife, a file, and a small saw. His material is olive and ash wood he cuts himself. Villagers refer to him as the "pipe master." The bowls are almost always shaped like animal heads, with the deer-head versions drawing the most interest; he himself admits his hand is not the same when it comes to the human figure. Once painting is finished, the pipes are taken to local fairs.

• Couto — The brand's founder, Antonio Moreira Couto, was born in Covilhã in 1933, coming from a family with a craft background going back two generations. His acquaintance with repair work dates to 1976; he was taught this trade by Manuel Bernardes, a pipe repairman in Barreiro. Couto also worked for Cardador for a while, and founded his own brand, known for geometric shapes, in 1998.

• EV — Behind the two letters is Eduardo Vieira, born in Porto in 1983. Turning to pipes in 2014 after more than a decade in woodworking, the maker continues his work in his home city. Alongside ebauchon and plateau briar blocks, he uses German-made ebonite, synthetic materials, and exotic woods. All production is done by hand; two lines called Filigree and Freedom, along with classic shapes, come out of this bench. Vieira says he prefers working freely on each piece rather than making the same pipe over and over.

• Haveneza — Takes its name from the Casa Haveneza tobacconist in Lisbon's Chiado district; the shop was opened by Henry Burnay in 1864. Anniversary series for the brand were commissioned from Italy in 2000 and 2004. The second of these marks the tobacconist's 140th anniversary and was produced at the Mastro de Paja workshop.
